My 04 cab has 31K on it if my paranoia gets the best of me and I replace the IMS and RMS should I also change the clutch assy and the aos, and the water pump wile I'm in there.

Suggestion
Water pumps can go bad from use but they can also go bad from being degraded by the antifreeze.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK So I've seen many Porsche owners talk about replacing as preventive maintenance items such as AOS, H2O pumps, coil packs, cam chain risers etc. Are these parts superior to the factory parts. Is the water pump impeller plastic or aluminum on the replacement part. Will these replacement parts last longer than the stock units. Confused as to why spend more money on the upgraded parts if they are not superior.? I always try to replace parts with superior parts. Ie brake pads rotors clutch PP TO bearing,... blowers you know stuff like that...kidding on the blower. My 04 cab has 31K on it if my paranoia gets the best of me and I replace the IMS and RMS should I also change the clutch assy and the aos, and the water pump wile I'm in there. When my inde rebuilt my trans on my 82 SC the recommendation was to replace all sensors the oil cooler the injector seals ect ect yada yada yada... I was in for 5200.00 bucks to do it right! IS this going to be the same??? I'm worried..........help me...
At 31k miles why are you paranoid? I have an 04 approaching 70k and haven't had any maor issues. General consensus is to replace associated parts to save on labor with the while you are in there thinking. If trans is out then clutch (depending on remaining life) and AOS. As to parts - I am one of those OEM only guys - just my personal preference and faith in the engineering and manfucature of the brand. I really like the fact that my car remains factory stock - but again that is a personal preference kind of thing.
When you shop for Porsche parts online, there are plenty of venders to choose from. Several that I've dealt with will actually label their parts OEM or with the name of the manufacturer, such as rotors, pads etc. My understanding is that Porsche may use several different manufacturers or suppliers for theses parts.
depends what you are buying...the IMS chain tension arm OEM is scary! I would buy aftermarket, coil pack OEM, pads, rotors - something better than OEM, IMS bearing - NOT oem, AOS oem is fine but if you track it there are options, bearings OEM is fine...
a lot depends what you are changing and what you are doing with the car - BUT
for the most part OEM parts from Sunset Porsche will be the easy choice
I go OEM on everything except for filters (oil/air/cabin) and of course the IMS bearing (which I haven't done .....yet)
You can order Mann filters on Amazon.com for a fraction of the price of OEM porsche boxed filters. I think Mann is the OEM supplier anyway.
Porsche would have "upgraded" the water pump impeller to metal if they thought that was a good idea. They haven't. The impeller doesn't sit very far into the water channel for the fact that there isn't much room.
Water pumps can go bad from use but they can also go bad from being degraded by the antifreeze. The fact that your car has 31K on it means nothing. Time is the killer of an item like that.
I have 46K on my 03 and I replaced the waterpump at 38K. The bearing made noise when i spun it so I am glad I replaced it before it leaked or the bearing took a dive.
Clutch is a whole different story, 31k on a clutch is nothing, provided the driver knew how to drive a manual and didn't ride the clutch all day long.
I had a bad experience with an aftermarket water pump. It started leaking with just 100 miles of use. Stick with factory parts.
The one I replaced it with - I'm not sure I would call the impeller metal, but it is not the same "plastic like" material that was on the original.
All sound advice I do agree on it depends on which part your replacing IMS upgrade brakes and rotors upgrade AOS OEM water pump OEM Thanks to all who responded....
