14 months into 996 ownership and I think I might need a rebuild, oil consumption has been creeping up, low end power seems to be creeping down, and the last oil change I did disgorged a 5mm square piece of metal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

14 months into 996 ownership and I think I might need a rebuild, oil consumption has been creeping up, low end power seems to be creeping down, and the last oil change I did disgorged a 5mm square piece of metal. The filter looked to be free of metal to my untrained eye, so I'm less worried about the ims than I am scored bores. How much is a full six cylinder rebuild these days? Site prices are dates 2018 so I imagine they've gone up. I was budgeting £2kpa for maintenance and kind of hoping it wouldn't need a rebuild until 115/120k miles which would be four years time at the mileages I do (5-10k pa) I'm a long way from Bolton too so I'm wondering if anybody has experience with getting the engine dropped by the likes of Northway in reading and couriered to Hartech for new liners and a rebuild. (I did something similar with my Elise when the head gasket failed and I took the opportunity to get the head ported)

POST 2Original post

Each car and failure is on its own path, a full six cyclinder rebuild is likely to cost you £10k I'd say. I can recommend AMS Porsche Hitchen for a rebuild aswell as Hartech Bolton

POST 3Original post

...not £10k...£12k minimum...probably more as the 'whilst you are in there' costs mount up...

POST 4Original post

Hartech have a price builer on their site to give you an idea. Personally I'd drive it up and have them do all the work. Probably work out cheaper, more fun and the works fully guaranteed by the same outfit.

POST 5Original post

I'd drive it up to Hartech, get them to have a good look at it and work out a plan, get the train home and let them do the whole lot.Much simpler.
