Spent a few quality hours under my 996 yesterday and made some very nice progress. Completed the 90K mile Major, and supplemented it with a few recommended replacements. All fluids done except the power steering. New parts; wipers, motor mounts, plugs & tube o-rings, water pump, serp belt, air and oil filters, keyswitch elec module. My two nagging minor things that I didn' have time for is the foam liner in the air plenum which still tosses little foamy gifts sometimes, and the trim fit around the front bumper underneath which had come loose. Everything else on the car is working as planned. I need to clean the seats and the steering wheel but that's not really maint. I might break down and send it to the detailer next week, but it really isn't that bad, and I could likely knock out a good detailing in a day. Coming home the temp gauge was exactly where it was before. The old pump looked very good coming out with only a few minor scuff marks on the impellers. I chalked that up to some cavitation, as the recess cone in the block was smooth. the motor mounts were perished, and had fallen 8-10mm from new. Shifts a bit smoother, and idles without and vibration now. Money and time well spent.

Did you change/replace the T-stat? This should be replaced when the water pump is replaced. While it is rare a T-stat fails before a water pump fails a T-stat won't last forever.

T-stat was replaced a few months ago. It looked like new when I examined it yesterday. It worked perfect on startup and maintained a steady ~160F on the highway.
