Hi, recently my
987.2 Cayman
developed a new noise which is clicking sound. Please watch the video:
When it happens:
It comes from rear end of driver side;
It sounds like metallic clicking noise;
It often happens during turning left at low speed. I could reproduce it almost every time;
Since it only makes that sound during the car is moving so it difficult to pinpoint the location. But I listened from both sides of the car at wheel area, it sounds like coming from left side and not directly from the wheel area, seems more inside;
I could also hear it when I put the car in a stretched position like driving up the drive way diagonally;
Barely happens when I turn right and no noise when I go straight;
It’s not directly speed related and rarely happen at high speed and going over pothole;
When it happens I could hear it clearly from inside of the car.
What changes I have made to my car:
Replaced both front rubber bump stop;
Replaced belt, tensioner, wheel and the bracket.
What I have checked:
Jacked up the car and see no loose suspension parts (shake by hand) or worn bushings (I’m not so experienced in suspension diagnose);
Used car noise check tool (clamped to suspension part with wire to a receiver) check major suspension parts and no findings.
What I plan to do next step:
Remove the engine cover behind the seats to listen again.
I have searched a lot on the internet but find no similar cases.
Any thoughts? Thanks a lot!
Interesting, I heard this on my
987.2
Boxster
the other day while turning right I believe.
Could be a CV joint. Look to see if the boots are torn/leaking. Might ought to have a mechanic listen.
I checked. The boots are fine.
Will a bad rear axle CV joint makes noise when turning?
Yes. that is the classic symptom of a worn CV joint. You need a mechanic to listen, they hear them way more often than me! It could be something else, but I would eliminate the cv theory first.
Any resolution on this? My '09
Boxster
has started making a noise like running over acorns (pop/snap) at a random period going forward. Turns don't change it. Going in reverse it doesn't do it.
Only thing different is yesterday I used the hand-brake for the first time in months (has
PDK
.. so I use Park)..
Ideas?
Don,
I've had 2 bad cv joints over the years ( non
Porsche
), in both instances there was a clicking noise only when the car was turning. I'm not saying it has to be turning, but it seem to me like a bad joint would make noise in both forward and reverse.
Your symptoms sound like maybe something in the e-brake may have come loose. Can you isolate one side or the other? My suggestion would be to lift the car and see if only one rear wheel is making noise. If so, pull that disc to investigate. Or inspect the brake cable for secureness.
Good Luck.
Bruce - thanks for the reply!
I meant to get back earlier with the solution - a self-tapping license plate screw right through the center tread on the right/rear tire. Funny thing was the noise didn't seem regular (like every ## feet) and it went away in reverse.. but that was it. $45 later the car is fine again (
plug
/patch, tire removed to install, reinstall tire, balance.. only thing - the center emblem isn't pointing at the fill
cap
..)
The clue was - the tire suddenly dropped about 3 PSI while I was showing my mechanic friend the noise. He took a look and spotted the screw.
So - much ado about nothing I guess..
So glad it was an easy fix.
