Suggestion

Can be a ***** to change if there is corrosion on the probe end, if you replace with bosch ones they are relatively cheap.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, started my car after about 2 weeks, engine went into limp mode, can anyone shed any light on the cables ? Looks like they have been chewed ? Thanks

POST 2Original post

The ones clipped into the red holders (blue/black) are your cat sensors (lambda/o2), that would definitely put your car into limp mode. Can be a ***** to change if there is corrosion on the probe end, if you replace with bosch ones they are relatively cheap.

POST 3Original post

...looks like they have been in your airfilter box...chewed out the small foam filter element?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply's appreciate it, think I need to invest in some traps

POST 5Original post

Cables don't look touched to me. Maybe the sheathing on the black one a tiny bit. Those bits lying around have definitely been chewed from somewhere by a mouse or rat, then left there. So they could well have chewed your wiring somewhere to cause your limp mode. They're a nightmare. I've been waging war on them for years. You'll have to do a visual inspection everywhere you can on the wiring or get the car to a garage. Set some traps around the car ASAP and check them every day. Get the big cheese snap traps. Kills them straight away. Well, apart from when it gets them over the shoulder and they try and get away in the trap. That's the worst. You walk into the garage and the trap isn't there. You have to find it and finish it off with a house brick. Not fun.

POST 6Original post

By Limp home mode do you mean the eml light is on or that it runs like a sack ? That foam is from the over engine sound deadening which means they have been probably in the arches each side where a lot of wiring goes .. The usual place for a nest is just behind the starter motor in the center of the engine . They nearly always chew through the knock sensor wires when there .. If i do a fault code test and see a knock sensor fault then i know straight away there will be a mouse nest there as it's the only time a knock sensor will fail .

POST 7Original post

A future rodent deterent is to clean the areas potentially affected and the spray with a diluted solution containg peppermint oil. They don't like it Mr Mainwaring

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the help here, eml goes on and the car drives terribly

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good idea, will give this a try

POST 10Original post

Funnily enough we had a small mouse invasion in the Xmas pressies a couple of weeks ago... the Bendicks mints were untouched!

POST 11Original post

Can you have a good look in the following places please .. Left side in the arch behind the coolant bottle .. ( engine side not the actual arch area ) .. Right side in the arch and look for any chewed wires here .. If possible then center of the engine and get a light to look the left side of the throttle and towards the starter motor. Take pictures if you see anything that looks out of place . Also each side of the engine and look at the wiring going to each coil. Basically the lambda sensors are inactive for about 40 seconds and won't really cause limp home mode .. Chewed wiring to a coil however will certainly give very poor running . Maf sensor if open circuit again wont along with knock sensors .. My feeling is coil wiring atm . As this has happened then another place to look is behind the battery and the foam panel there .. make sure it hasn't got any holes in it as that's the main entrance into the car mice will use .
