When I rode bikes I used to nod at other bikers in our shared adversity of all the car drivers intent on killing us (little has changed).

Suggestion
Boxster drivers pretty much always wave, which is nice (as a 981 owner), no idea about 911s (they used to 15 years ago when last I drove one, perhaps that's changed?) but you'd hope the rarity would still be enough to encourage that cameraderie.

Suggestion
I've not found any EV owners waving, not that sort of 'club', and range anxiety isn't that much of a thing because most of us have the sense to either operate within a sensible radius (80 miles with my current and soon to depart Jag) or use a car that's an appliance (looking at you Tesla) where you can ram in a good few miles in a short time if you don't care about battery life (which many of them don't as it's not their car).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have owned my 981 Boxster for about 9 months now and quite surprised about how may other Porsche drivers give a wave. Mainly Boxsters but a stunning new 911 yesterday gave a wave. I'm not a waver, but now wavering (pardon the pun). Protocols welcome!
Doesn't really seem to be a thing over here, which is a shame.
Was over in France a couple of months ago and pretty much every Porsche driver gave a wave.
Id like to apologise to the wavers that have waved and i haven't registered in time to wave back, and or at times ive stuck my hand up and waved out the roof.
Then it prompts me to wave at the next Porsche 911 and or other 2 seater Porsche and then they don't wave at me, then i wonder the same they just surprised and didn't respond in time.

Porsches are so common on British roads today, waving every time you see one would be positively dangerous. At best, people would think you are having an epileptic fit.
Got a tremendous wave from another cayman owner on the way back from collecting my car, rolled up alongside me on the motorway and have a very enthusiastic thumbs up, but that's been an outlier. Do sometimes give a wee nod to fellow 718s.
I try and keep it model specific but I'm not sure why...
So I lift my hand/wave at Boxsters and Caymans....
Not so much at 911s as they tend not to wave back and definitely not to the family car bunch...
We also have a 71 VW Bay camper and we/other owners go flippin' mental when another is seen...
I often wave, I find almost every time I get ignored by Cayman and Boxster owners.
When I owned both of those I always wave. Must be a new category of owner.
I always wave from my 981 Boxster and I usually get a wave back 90% of the time from other Caymans, Boxster and 911s. Call me old fashioned but I think it’s a nice thing to do and it always brightens my day. Cayennes and Macans don’t seem to bother so much though
I always wave ,but tend to restrict it to other Boxsters and Caymans as the 911 crowd can’t see my hand because their noses are too big especially when trying to look down them..
Tend to get a reasonable amount of return waves but strangely i don’t wave at Macans or Cayennes…
My wife doesn’t get why i wave, but then she’s not a Porsche person..she never waves at other Nissans…
If you drive an Aston Martin, you don't wave, you just lift a gentlementy finger off the steering wheel.
I believe it's to signify tapping your pipe out !
Not really a waver but may do to be polite if someone waves at me.
A few months ago some bloke in a Rennsport was coming the opposite way and gave a salute but didn't make eye contact. Still makes me laugh thinking about that one.

On that whole it is, but it’s something that’s done between enthusiasts. I used to always be waved at by MR2 Roadster owners when I had one of those. I got more Porsche waves in my 987 than in my current 981, for some reason.
I got a wave last month from a 911 going through Darvel in Ayrshire - first ever and i was too busy looking at the car i didn't notice until they were level with me. Sorry red 911 owner.
Years ago all Porsche owners used to wave. Then they came out with the kettles and these owners didn’t see to wave.
Since no one drives their air cooled cars any more waving seems to be a thing of the past.
Ferrari and Mx5s always wave at each other so would be nice to see Porsche owners doing it again, much better than being stared at like a loon
In the past I waved to fellow owners of Integrales, Imprezas, Lotuses, Caysters and 911s.
Now I wave to fellow owners of Alpinas and Foresters ... so not very often.
However, when out with the family in Mrs Churchie's silver 21-reg Vitara, I always wave - and flash my lights - at identical ones in the opposite direction. It drives the family mad!!
Had some waves in France, but never at home.
However, when I had the Elise, every other lotus owner would wave. I’d say pretty much any lotus owner is an ‘enthusiast’ whereas many (not all) Porsche owners buy for different reasons, particularly in the suv/saloon side of things.

Or a bloody Motorhome. Drives me mad... In summer abroad there are about a zillion motorhomes and it is exhausting just ignoring the wavers.
In my Porsche/Porsches, I don't wave....I may be miserable

You ignore the waves - what about the upturned pineapples????
I’ve always thought waving was reserved for something a bit different/rare/special/classic. In my Series 2a I always get waves and give them too. Same for the Aston. And A110. My Z3M Coupes always got waves. Also my 348 and 355 but not the 430 I had though, or in fact the Range Rovers or Continental GT etc.
In my experience it is not usually done in run of the mill cars, however if people are friendly and wave in whatever car it is then it’s a bit of a treat to have others being pleasant so always worth a replying wave - happy pleasant people are rare these days so enjoy and make the most of it!

There's a weather and time of day factor.... yesterday on a sunny evening drive (just for a drive didn't need to go anywhere) got 2 waves from Porsche drivers (they made the first move) and a Honda S2000! Convertibles out for a sunny evening drive who probably didn't need to go anywhere.
In the seventies, when I had a rubber-bumper MGB GT, the chrome-bumper MGBs would mostly not wave. When I saw a rubber-bumper GT almost identical to mine I waved and he didn't. Huh. In fact, he just looked confused. Ah. I was driving the Mini.

Caterhams and Morgans wave to each other too. Probably commiserating in some way.

Ooh that's harsh
It's more a wave that says "good to see we both like driving a hobby for the sheer hell of it - I'm also having fun but likewise I'm too hot / too cold / have tinnitus setting in / have a passenger that is praying for this journey to end soon"

I just got a Taycan and owners are waving and giving thumbs up.
I've noticed EV drivers waving at each other.
They drive so slowly due to range anxiety that they have more time to recognise a fellow EV'er and to decide to wave.
I wave to other Porsche ICE drivers in my 981 but I'm travelling so fast, as are they, that neither they nor I see any wave.

They feel it. It's a shock wave.

As an EV owner (frankly, for the tax breaks) looking forward to my Macan S in October, *and* a 981 owner. your comment is amusing but largely unfounded.

(this might be blindingly obvious, worth stating)
Q: Why do people wave on the road? A: Because they perceive some unspoken 'club membership'. When I rode bikes I used to nod at other bikers in our shared adversity of all the car drivers intent on killing us (little has changed). When I drove Corvettes (many Vettes) we used to wave at each other because there were so few on the road that it was an event to stumble over another one. Ditto Maseratis. So when the Tesla was a new thing, it qualified. When every company in the country made their salesmen take one for tax reasons, that went out of the window.
Boxster drivers pretty much always wave, which is nice (as a 981 owner), no idea about 911s (they used to 15 years ago when last I drove one, perhaps that's changed?) but you'd hope the rarity would still be enough to encourage that cameraderie.

As above, they were moderately unusual a few years ago - which is why owners waved.
The only car where I was miffed not to get a wave was passing a Ford GT whilst driving my FGT (what are the chances?). I guess you'd say it was just a Ford.

That's odd for something as rare as two Ford GTs not to wave at each other!

Quite bizarre - I've only ever seen a single FGT whilst driving mine.... actually I don't think I've seen any on the roads ever, apart from that one time.
I am about to buy my first Porsche, so will be interested to see how other road users respond and how other Porsche owners respond.
Drivers of older Porsche tend to acknowledge each other with a flash or wave, I'll acknowledge boxsters from my 997- maybe I shouldn't...(?) I never got the memo!.
Anything 991 or newer seem to keep themselves to themselves (unless they wave to each other but ignore those of us in older models) I can confirm that if you drive a TVR and give a thumbs up to a classic 993, it seems to confuse them!

I'd wave at you
Clearly I met someone on the non-waving spectrum
Last Friday. Tiny Cotswolds country lane. I'm in my 3.2 Clubsport. Car is coming up the other way so I pull in to a tiny layby. Its a completed restored late '60s 911. I waved. The driver didn't even acknolwedge my existance as he cruised past...
On the motorway, quite often I drop into lane one if I find a gap and stick cruise on 65. Loads of people stare at me as they go past. I wave at them too
Kids love it more than adults tbh lol
I'm a waiver but it depends what it is. Caysters and 911s I'll always let on to. Other models not so much as they're either company car drivers and don't care or ladies that are driving SUVs. Some wave back and some don't. It doesn't really bother me.
In honesty, where I live you don't even get a wave to say thanks if you let someone out of the side road!
