Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all! I was giving my car a light detail earlier when I noticed some reddish splotches on the supposedly stainless steel " Cayman S " kickplates in the door sill. After a little cleaning and some investigation, it looks like small spots of rust are forming in various parts of the kickplate. The surface is scarcely pitted, if at all, so it doesn't seem like this is very far along. I guess the question is: 1. Is this much of anything to worry about? I didn't think that any Porsche was particularly susceptible to rust, but perhaps these bits are? 2. Are the kickplates easily removable to be refinished? I know rust can be a slippery slope, so I'd rather not ignore this if it's a simple/cheap fix Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I'm not familiar specifically with rust on the kickplates, but depending on the grade of steel, stainless can get a little surface rust under some conditions. It's typically reasonably easy to remove: a Mr. Clean magic eraser might do it, or you could use some brass wool. Both of these are pretty mild but test on a small area first to make sure there's no impact on the overall finish.

POST 3Original post

You shouldn't gauge galvanized metal longevity (body parts) against thin trim pieces, that said the trim could have been more robust.

POST 4Original post

OP do you have a picture of the kick plates? the stock ones seem to be made out of some light aluminium (part where it says Cayman or Boxster ) and they seem to be quite thin and easy to stain/mark. I had to PPF them for protection.
