Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I did a crude leak test on them just to be sure.

use ally grease on the threads if you want them to ever come undone again .

Suggestion

Would you use ally grease on exhaust studs like these or ignore and let them corrode into the head, and rely on the nut for future manifold removal?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, following my MOT (slight leak from exhaust) I decided to bite the bullet. Xmas holiday project planned.

POST 2Original post

Snap. Although I've got no illusions so I'm calling mine a winter project :floor: My C4S is currently garaged for the winter at my MILs. It's up on axel stands and all manifold bolts have been dressed with Plus Gas and ACF50. From the quick look I had a couple of weeks ago the manifold bolts didn't really resemble bolts. I may resort to gringing/cutting the heads off and trying to get the manifolds off leaving a decent stud length to have a go with a stud extractor or having a bit of thread visible to get a Stomski jig fitted. I'm probably going to have to remove the comlete exhaust. I'll keep people posted. Mark

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

my manifold bolts look very crusty and I will no doubt have sheared ones (hopefully not all) to deal with. I went with the £150 "revered engineered" Chinese manifolds from EBay and Topgear 200 cell cats and "mild" sports back boxes.

POST 5Original post

Ebay manifolds for me to, they appear to be good quality, well made and good welding. I did a crude leak test on them just to be sure. All OK. My back boxes (PSE) were removed in February for seam welding and new mounting hardware fitted so they should come off without to much effort... I hope. I've got new M8 titanium studs and nuts for fitting the new manifolds, so that should future proof things.

POST 6Original post

Titainium exhaust studs from Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203697578476?hash=item2f6d5261ec:g:pP4AAOSwx4JfHGtK

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ti studs look expensive to me, I'm going with S\S bolts (screwfix's finest). Interestingly I bought the cats and back boxes from "Directfixexhausts" but supplied from Topgear cheaper than buying directly from Topgear

POST 8Original post

No affiliation but this titanium set seems better value https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265397200586

POST 9Original post

That's good value for Ti! Good thing about the stud and nut approach is that if the stud does seize in the head it's of little worry as the Ti stud to nut will not seize. Same sort of goes for a stainless stud and nut approach

POST 10Original post

Can anyone tell me whether all Ti is created equal, or are there grades in the same way there are for stainless, mild steel, aluminium?

POST 11Original post

There are many different grades of titanium bolts .. https://www.extreme-bolt.com/blog/t...ng-the-best-grade-for-your-tough-application/ Rule of thumb when fitting any of them though .. use ally grease on the threads if you want them to ever come undone again .

POST 12Original post

Thanks Ian. Would you use ally grease on exhaust studs like these or ignore and let them corrode into the head, and rely on the nut for future manifold removal?

POST 13Original post

Use in the head as well. If the stud snaps or the thread strips, it'll just make it harder work getting it out.

POST 14Original post

All the best guys :thumb: I only have one of these as a momento of my full system installation

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's a very good point, trying to drill s\s or Ti snapped studs would be a absolute nightmare. Maybe steel studs with copper flashed nuts would be a better choice (after all the OEM bolts have lasted 21years). I'm still favouring S\S bolts.
