Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking to purchase a 911 996 soon would like some feed back on the treaded bore score issues on the gen 2 3.6 996 seems it is more likely to suffer from it, is it just down to owners trashing them when cold and cooling issues or is it just luck of the draw, [/list]

POST 2Original post

Luck of the draw mostly and In any case it's impossible to know how a secondhand car has been treated previously..Check any car out thoroughly. Act in haste, repent at leisure has never been more fitting. :thumb:

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes very true, I will check everything, bore score is a worry but the 3.4 not as much by all accounts, will choose Wisley.

POST 4Original post

Do not get bogged down with all the scare stories. There are relatively few problems by all accounts. As usual with life bad news and problems travel like wildfire. Do your checks, buy the car and enjoy it. If it goes bang then use it as an excuse for a Hartech rebuild and increase your cars reliability/desirability/performance. That's my two penneth anyway :thumb:

POST 5Original post

As above really. Either buy one that's been rebuilt by a reputable engine builder or by a broken one and get it built to spec. There are some good examples out there. Buy cheap buy twice 👍

POST 6Original post

I bought a 996.2 with a full service history and a pampered one at that, showroom condition and low ownership from a very caring owner. On his way home from a day trip the engine just let go. The moral of the story is that history is no garantee and it really is the luck of the draw or buy one which has had a replacement engine or a rebuilt engine recently fitted. If you can wait until spring, (shameless plug comming), you can buy this one off me with a fresh Hartech engine

POST 7Original post

:yeah: Same happened me. I think you should consider the offer above - price dependent! The engine is only one part of the equation. Have a look at MCs latest thread on this 996.1 and the type of work and costs that are involved in the other bits. Yes you can buy 996's "cheap", but they are not cheap. If you want to enjoy a Fantastic car, buy one and prepare to spend some money on it. It can be a lottery as to how much you might spend. My 3.9 is a joy to drive. Best of luck

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, I am a bit of a home mechanic when it comes to looking after my own cars and I will do all the maintenance on this porsche, so at the end of the day I will just buy one and enjoy it and hope it doesn't happen, some will be out of reach of my budget £17000 or a wee bit more , I am in N Ireland and there is not many for sale over here, but there is 2 at the moment for sale with one dealer a 99 carrera 4.red leather interior and a 02 carrera 2 with 104000 miles with red interior also,£15950 for the 99 car and £16950 for the 02 car, apart from that, that is all for sale here, plenty across the pond, so I need to look at more cars than that to conpair,

POST 9Original post

I went with the fingers crossed approach to buying! I picked up a cheap car which had excellent body work but little history other than a couple of MOTs and the service book. So far things have worked out so I'm staying positive

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's Good to ko, I will do my checks and go from there 👍

POST 11Original post

Bore score is rare on a 996 but can happen, i've seen a handful over the years .. more common on a 997 but again .. not that common in average of vehicles sold ... IMHO .

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that, that will put my mind at ease There is a lot off stuff on the net mostly in America, if a 996 with the 3.6 has 100.000 miles On at this stage then that is good.

POST 13Original post

I don't think mileage means anything - borescore isn't the only thing that can happen. Some (mine) drop valve seats at higher mileage even if they have been rebuilt (mine was rebuilt before I bought it due to a dropped valve seat and then did it again on me 7,000 miles post rebuild) and so it can be a lottery. Most of the time the engine will be fine. it's the recent service history that is where the value is. Mine has 130k miles on it, but almost every mechanical components has been replaced or repaired by me. As I'm sure you know, service history showing how the servicing brake fluid was don't regularly in the first 15 years of ownership is mostly irrelevant if it wasn't done in the past two years. It is nice to have the older stuff as a seller, but no real value in it for a buyer until they sell. You could buy a car with a perfect engine but still need to sink 10k into other work - suspension, brakes, powerstering rack pipes, corrosion under the side skirts, AOS, brake pipe over gear box, clutch, flywheel, ABS, wheel bearings, radiators and condensers, missing underbody panels, rear subframe braces, gear shift cables, whee refurb, tyres... it is an old car so it will need some work. There is a thread recently covering expected costs and issues buying an older 996 on the forum. Have you found it? I find this forum easier to search and has as good info as the American sites. The is lots of info in this forum - especially in Mister Corn, Infrasilver, Dammits and other build threads and thousands of very useful photos. Don't limit your search to NI - much more on offer in Scotland, England & Wales. Do your research, talk to the seller, consider buying from a a long term club or forum member where you can track the car history - and not just this forum - any reputable one. At least you then have some sense in f how the car was looked after. That's what I have done having previously bought a number of cars over there. Hope this helps provoke some thoughts.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good advice I see you are I Dublin, did you get your car locally, I am reading through the tread you mentioned and it will take some time to go through. I am looking all the time over in England at 996s, its a bit of a my mind field. To much to choose from but I will not actually hunt one down until near the time I am going to pull the trigger, there is 2 for sale and suits my budget but I have not looked at the them yet. I did get a drive in one 996 a 2000 auto tip but looking forward to getting a drive in a manual car soon, will be good compare the 3.4 and 3.6 and decide which one to go for, which ever one I get it will be for long term ownership as I mentioned in my first tread I am not purchasing one until early January.

POST 15Original post

Rule of thumb and what i always recommend pretty much regardless .. Always get a ppi done with a borescope inspection by an independent garage that is Not associated with the seller . I do this for a living and i have found .. " reasons " the car is being sold shall we say a few times over the years . If you buy a house then you get a survey done .. a car is often the second largest purchase a person will ever make . I am available to go through any ppi inspection report and explain it should you need going forward as i guarantee they can be scary but often are minor issues . Email or PM to message me as im not as active here as i used to be .. sorry .
