Suggestion
Even with using the car on the weekends to drive longer distances, I don't usually put more than 6.000 - 7.000 km per year on the car.

Always been against smaller engines that get tons of HP through the use of turbos.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been driving a 2015
981 Boxster
S for a year now but lately my wife has been complaining about the two seater concept and has been pushing me to think about buying a
911
were I can fit the kids for a short drive if needed (not the most comfortable rear seats but will work for a short drive if I need to take them to school in case she can't).
I'm more than happy with my
Boxster
but since the wife is "giving me an order to upgrade".... I need to obey. hahahaha
My local dealership is offering my the new 2017
911
Carrera
(base) but at the same time I saw a nice 2016
911
4S with only 2.000 km at a good price. The 2017
Carrera
would be equipped with all the goodies like
PASM
, PSM and
PDK
(which it is something very nice to have in a city were you can have big traffic jams). The 9114S is also fully equipped, but equipped with manual transmission which I've read a lot of people like.
Right now, I don't think that the price difference between the two cars would be more than US$ 15.000 (being more expensive the base
Carrera
).
The car would be a daily driver and I'm not planning to take it to the track.
Any suggestions from those of you with experience with these cars ? Which one would you choose ?
You may have answered your own question. If its a dd and your going to be in traffic often, I would get the car with the
PDK
. If it was for fun only, I would get the 4S.
Doesn't the 4S have the wider body, like the turbo?
From what I've read and watched, the new base is faster than a
911
.1 S (which is what I have). If specs the way you like, the new
911
would be my choice (and it has
CarPlay
).
My hesitation would be that it's a new engine and there's no history of reliability to look at.

If planning to drive in the snow the 4s with snow tires would be nice but having a manual in heavy traffic as a DD would be a royal pain.
New motor, unknown reliability. Yeah
Porsche
knows turbos but....car has plastic oil pan
who knows? More stuff to break. If you plan not to keep the car beyond the warranty period, the new
Carrera
would be my pick.
Thanks guys for all your opinions.
Still need to do a lot of thinking and need to go and try the new
Carrera
to see how it drives.
Even that this car would be a daily driver, I drive short distances since the office is near home. Even with using the car on the weekends to drive longer distances, I don't usually put more than 6.000 - 7.000 km per year on the car.
No snow in my city but sometimes some heavy rains on winter.
Always been against smaller engines that get tons of HP through the use of turbos. Just don't know about their reliability in the long term. That's why for example I didn't buy the new XC90 for the wife (big and heavy car with a 2.0 liter engine) and now I'm possibly going with a Hybrid Cayenne.
I'll weigh-in on this. The turbocharged engine in the 991.2 will not suffer as a DD and will offer more accessible power in traffic. The electronics will be updated (useful in a DD). My vote is the base.
The new
911
even in base model is a beast however the wide body of the 4S is a thing of beauty. I don't think you'll regret going either way, people usually get used to and love what they get.
Between turbo/non-turbo and rwd/awd it is hard to imagine that driving both doesn't instantly decide it.
I agree that a loaded, used, late c4s will hold value better. Look at the earliest 991.1 cars, especially base models. It is brutal. Late
997.2
are ridiculously expensive.
I got a super deal on my loaded CPO 2015 C2S with 3000 miles - 29% off MSRP. IMO, 991's are a super deal right now. For me with my budget, it would b hard to justify a new 991.2.
I had the chance to drive both cars this week and all I can say is that they are both incredible. Coming from a 2015
Boxster S
theres a huge difference on how both cars handle and how they accelerate.
The 4S is a great car........ it gives me some peace of mind that if I take a high speed corner and for some reason and not 100% concentrated, it's going to help me and it's not going to bite me in my but. At his speeds you are more relaxed knowing that you have a four wheel drive car so for sure you enjoy more the car. Mechanical transmission wasn't a problem since I've been driving mechanical cars for over 20 years. I must say that this transition is the best mechanical I have tried and shifting is easy and fast.
The
carrera
S is a different animal. The first thing you notice is the whistling of the Turbo and it's lag at low rpm's. After 10 minutes of driving the car around, I completely forgot about the different sound. I must say I was really impressed with this car. Is so fast, acceleration is brutal and its handles very well. I was very cautious in the beginning because I was afraid that the tail will slide if I was going too fast on a curve but the reality was that the car was very stable (maybe I didn't push it that hard...). The
PDK
as expected is ridiculously fast and is a really enjoyment to drive with it. If you want the manual effect, you can use the paddle shifters.
Love both cars and definitely love the loom of the 4S, butI must say I was very impressed with the new
Carrera
. NowI just have to negotiate with the local dealer and try to make a decision if I go with a hard top or with the cabriolet. Good bad I can't have both.
By they way.... my wife asked me this morning why I've been so smiling and in a good mood this weekend........ could it be different after driving a
911
?
Finally bite the bullet.....
There was a 2015 Targa 4S with only 4.000 kilometers but my wife didn't like the bright blue color of the car, so it was immediately out of the question. I did like the color but for me, the dealer was asking to much money for a car that is already 2015.
I did like the
Carrera
4S with the manual transmission but my wife is not a big fan of manuals, so once again..... out of the question.
So finally decided for a 991.2 base
Carrera
. Why not an S ? Well.... a lot more money and not a lot of difference in the car besides more HP and
Sport Chrono
Package. The new base now comes fully loaded and for 1/4 of the price difference, I can later update de ECU and get the same HP from the S. Don't need the
Sport Chrono
........actually I never used it in my Boxter S.
Hopefully I made the right decision......
Good luck with the dealer negotiations. I have a 2009 4S and love it. But I also love the
06 Cayman S
we have. I think the 4s with the wide body and plenty of power for normal driving and TRACK time, is the bomb. Pick your fav and cut the check. There is no "wrong" in your choice.
Is there a good professional review of the new 4 base bs a 15 or 2016 4s
Trying to decide between a targa 4s 2015 400 miles or a new targa 4....
The 2015 is loaded and virtually what I would pick and more (white with red black)

I'd go for the 991.1 C4S in a heartbeat if the options pricing and condition of the car were all right. But that's just me. Everybody has their own preferences. My wife doesn't like the manuals either. But I had a
Macan
Turbo with
PDK
and she never drove it. So I went back to a manual with this 991 C2S and love it. Love blipping the throttle with the sport exhaust on!
Well said and being a C4S owner, I agree it is a thing of beauty. Your point about people usually get used to the car they buy and love what they get is rarely discussed here. The great things about
Porsche
's is they are all very high performance cars for the money, especially used models. Once you get used to "what you got," you can push the car - any P car - as far as your skills will allow.
The 991.2 C2 is ALL the car you need for the road and now that
PASM
and
PCM
are standard, it's agreat daily driver.
Get the SC which gives you the abilaity to switch Modes on the steering wheel and the 'Push To Pass' button in the center of the rotary Mode selector.
A C4 or C4S if you drive in snow
A C2S or C4S for Track.
The torque down low makes the 991.2 much more drivable and faster!
The C4S gets the power down and is the fastest of the lot.
Nice choice, you will be satisfied out of your mind once you get it and drive it.
I have ACC and LCA for Tollway crusing and the Multifunction heated Sport Steering Wheel for hands on driving.
But these up the price.-Richard
I recall reading the C2S and C4S were the both just as fast in dry conditions, but even the slightest amount of wet the C4S was superior. The C2S was more fun due to rear wheel drive drama, but had to be driven carefully because the power produced by a new
911
S requires traction with 4 wheels to use it.
IMO, I'd go for a base
911
(rear wheel) or a C4S...or base 4. 2S would be my last choice... way too much power for 2 wheels unless tail happy cars are your thing.
I do NOT think you are crazy having one - or TWO - sports cars with kids because I'll bet they love riding in them too. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that college costs are rising faster than the price of Porsches
so continue to save for those expenses. I certainly would not let the new president affect your plans for an R8
but it sounds like you already know how to capitalize if a recession hits.
Yes, my two boys love riding in the back of my 997. Yes, I know, college is getting more and more expensive. The bad thing is that it doesn't guarantee a job after you have spend all that money on books and tuition. I not hoping for a recession but definitely learned a lot from it.
