I did replace my shift boot with a piece from them and it looks great.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The leather on the sides of my e-brake have small cuts and scrapes from seatbelt fastening over the years and I am looking to replace the leather. I have found various covers/boots online but they are for the whole unit. I need something that can integrate with the CF tip piece. I have noticed the top of the base has a removable piece but not sure about the sides. Anyone done this or know how to do it - hopefully without taking the interior completely apart!
This is the area in question. First post so not sure of the protocols here but rest assured I am preparing a question about which oil to use for my next post!!
I have ordered from redline leather goods, although not for the porsche. Thought their stuff was of great quality with very good fit. Here is the ebrake boot from them.
1998-04 Porsche 911 (996) ebrake boot
There have been countless discussions here and elsewhere about what oil to use. Please, for the love of God, search & read before posting anything about oil....
That said, the easiest Ebrake repair for you might be to find another black leather one and move your handle to it. Also, I've found that I need to remove the rear center console to get the ebrake out. And, because I do don't want to risk anything, I pull the passenger seat and the lower front center console too (to get the rear center console out.) A sizable job, if you've not done it before.
If you wish to recover your ebrake yourself, some things to consider. Because you have the CF handle, there are two pieces. Lower body and the top/back cover. You'll need to find the right leather and have it skived to a suitable thickness. I did 4mm. The lower body need to be cut to match the contorns of the base and a seam sewn into it. The top/back cover doesn't need a seam to fit but needs the french seam to match OEM.
Handle stripped down.
The two leather pieces in front are the ones you are replacing
Dallas Custom Steering sewed the seam. I'm starting the refit.
Backside photo.
Base covered. Top rear cover ready for reinstall.
Ebrake back together and ready for re-install.
Glue and leather tool. I used disposable brushes.
Thanks for the info
@KeyWest996
- yours looks great! I may try option1 and find a replacement - not sure I have the skill for the refurb - I don't have a lot of luck removing large interior pieces without somehow breaking the plastic tabs, etc..
Don't worry about the oil question - I have been down that rabbit hole. That was my attempt at humor!
@steam_mill
I ordered the bottom brake boot from Redline but it doesn't work with my handle setup. I have that bottom piece and the piece you linked to if anyone is interested.. I did replace my shift boot with a piece from them and it looks great. Was able to match the rest of my interior and stitching quite well. Through some good communication they even got the height just right for my short shifter!
JL, my handbrake wasn't in poor condition, I was doing a complete interior and adding deviating stitching, so that was my main motivator. That said, 1. I was never impressed with the quality of the original leather and the thin stuff can get damaged very easily 2. I dinged my handbrake up a couple of times over the years by Not removing and reinstalling the center console carefully. To remove the center console, you must move it three or four inches towards the passengers seat - so that seat should be removed. And the center console must be lifted some in the front to get it out - so the lower front center console should be removed too. 3 most importantly, just taking good care when you are using the vehicle.
Actually my first interior. Ever. But I'm very methodical. I do tons of research before I do anything. And I practiced on much easier parts first.
The tool was very handy. Pushed the leather without leaving a mark. I got it from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply. btw, they did all my 4mm skiving. Very inexpensive skiving and very well done.

I've started putting an album of my interior build on my profile. I assume everyone can see it.
1. Wow
2. Rocky mountain leather supply happens to be in salt lake City which is where I happen to be. Thanks.
3. I will be looking at your photos in short order; there's Great stuff in there I'm sure.
Welcome to the
my interior is aging faster than me
club! Those seatbelt nicks on the e-brake boot are the automotive equivalent of a favorite leather jacket getting scuffedhurts the soul. I battled this exact issue on my 997.2 until I discovered a
surgical approach
that might save you from full interior teardown:
The Stealth Patch Method (For Side Leather Only)
Assess the Damage
:
If the cuts are surface-level (not structural), Lexol cleaner + a leather
filler
(like ColourLock) can blend them surprisingly well. Did this on my drivers bolsterlasted 5 years.
Partial Replacement Hack
:
That removable top piece? Its held by hidden clips. Pry gently with a nylon trim tool (
not
a screwdriverask how I know).
The
sides
are typically stitched to a backing plate. Redlines boots are top-tier, but if youre keeping your CF tip:
Carefully slice the old leathers stitching (X-Acto knife > scissors)
Use the original as a template for new leather (5oz veg-tan from Tandy Leather works)
Reattach with
contact cement + stitching awl
no need to remove the entire assembly
Pro Tip
: Before committing, test-fit with
cheap vinyl
first. My first attempt looked like a kindergarten art project.
Time Sink Warning
: This quick fix took me 3 weekends. If youre tracking DIY hours (or debating just buy a new boot),
Calculadora de Horas
helps decide when to call a pro.
Hows the Redline Leather quality compared to OEM? Ive debated their shift boot for ages but fear my stitching skills belong on a sailboat, not a Porsche
