Announced by
Porsche
today:
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/prod...rga-13296.html
From March 2017, a total of five variants will be available in Germany:
the 911 Carrera GTS with rear-wheel drive, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS with all-wheel drive – both of the above available as a Coupé and Cabriolet – and the 911 Targa 4 GTS with all-wheel drive. A newly developed turbocharger for 3.0-litre six-cylinder flat engine increases power to 331 kW/450 hp (combined fuel consumption 9.7–8.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 220–196g/km). The engine delivers 22 kW (30 hp) more than the 911 Carrera S and 15 kW (20 hp) more than the corresponding GTS prior model with a naturally aspirated engine. All variants are available with a manual seven-gear transmission or optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK).
More power for more performance
The maximum torque of 550 Nm provides even better acceleration and elasticity figures. The torque is available between 2150 and 5000 rpm. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is included as standard on all GTS models. The GTS Coupés feature the PASM sports chassis, which lowers the body by ten millimetres. The fastest sprinter in the family is the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupé: With Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and the Sport Chrono Package as standard, it races from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. All GTS models feature a top speed in excess of 300 km/h. The front-runner at 312 km/h is the Coupé with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Despite the increase in performance, the GTS remains efficient – the 911 Carrera GTS with PDK, for example, consumes only 8.3 l/100 km according to the NEDC. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 188 g/km.
Typical GTS: Numerous black elements both inside and out
The GTS models stand out within the 911 model line not only in terms of technology, but also in their visual design: All of the vehicles are based on the wide all-wheel-drive chassis, which measures 1852 mm even on the rear-wheel-drive models. The new Sport Design front apron emphasises the sporty character. The front end is aerodynamically optimised. A low front spoiler and increased rear spoiler extension height further reduce the lift forces on the front and rear axle compared to the Carrera S models. On the rear, the GTS is unmistakeable: smoked tail lights, silk-gloss black air intake grille and central black twin tailpipes of the sports exhaust system, which is included as standard.

A new black trim strip between the tail lights characterises the rear-wheel-drive models. The light strip is reserved for the all-wheel-drive models. Sport Design exterior mirrors, 20-inch wheels with central locking device painted in silk-gloss black, plus GTS logos on the doors complete the side view. The characteristic Targa bar, which is supplied in black for the first time on the GTS, also lends the 911 Targa a particularly distinctive look.
New Porsche Track Precision app and high-quality equipment
GTS genes also shape the interior. The stopwatch of the Sport Chrono Package is integrated as a central component of the dashboard. The Porsche Track Precision app has been further enhanced specially to coincide with the market launch of the GTS models. Its features include automatic recording, detailed display and analysis of driving data on a smartphone. GTS passengers sit on Alcantara seats with a new stitching pattern. The Sports seats Plus with GTS logos on the headrests can be adjusted in 4-ways electrically and provide increased lateral support and comfort. Other features include brushed, black anodised aluminium trim strips on the instrument cluster as well as a high proportion of Alcantara, which can be found on the steering wheel rim, centre console and armrests, for example.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Wouldn't this be the 991.
2
GTS?
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Crap! And I had a Typo too! Hopefully Chow4us will fix both.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Bigger turbos, 450 hp. At what point will the engine burst?

Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Crikey...this will probably be as quick as a 991.1 GT3 or 911R and be a great daily driver. It's especially attractive (to me, anyway) with the 7-speed.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Agreed. Car and Driver clocked the base 991.2 Carrera at 3.4 secs 0-60. The GTS is going to be a beast!

Looks like mine is getting even closer to becoming a dinosaur.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Nah. On the recommendation from someone on another forum, I watched "No Man's Land" with Charlie Sheen steeling Porsches. 1987. I loved watching the footage. Movie sucked.
These cars are timeless. That is the beauty of a 911.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
The 'purists et al' better face it, the 991.2 has become a 'sweet spot' in Porsche's series of water cooled engines for the 911!
With or without PDK, performance in a straight line is a match for almost all 991's but the 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S and not far off any 911 Porsche in handling.
The 991.2 GTS with Sport Pasm and PDCC will handle outstandingly.
What's not to like, unless you have an older Porsche and subscribe to the mantra 'older is better' without any objective evidence.-Richard
BTW If you haven't guessed it, I am tired of hearing from older model Porsche owners every time a new Porsche is announced that their Porsche is better.
The 991.2's handle better, are faster on Track, drive much better on road and in traffic and the PDK is brilliant.
Porsche Connect Plus is simply marvelous technology.
While you row through the gears, you can look at my black tail pipes!
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
With a 991.2 GTS with a manual gearbox, "traditionalists" can have the best of the old and new worlds. My lusting over a 991.1 GT3 or the GT4 has officially ended.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
I miss still looking forward to a GT3 with a 6mt and 4.0, however this looks pretty sweet.
I want one!

I hear it is coming.....in an NA form too!
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
Sigh! There is always something new and better and faster around the corner. Chasing it would be fine if I had an endless amount of disposable income. Or should lease every 3 years. When I bought my 13 BS, the finance manager tried hard to push me into a lease. 'What will you want next in three years?'.
Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
The 2019 911S will walk all over this car. Next generation, hybrid, instant torque. Mid-engined just like the current 991RSR. This will make the 991.2 buyers, particularly at the Turbo and Turbo S level sick.
You're right. Chasing technology is a bad idea. You can't win. Just buy what you can and enjoy it. But just imagine, Mid-engine 911, hybrid drive on all 4 wheels, yet still a flat 6. Zoom Zoom. Its coming. 18 months. Geneva? This is going to be a short production cycle.
BTW - 991.2
GTS
is on the german configurator. Not on US yet.
Here it is:
Porsche Car Configurator
Anyone want to guess / calculate the US MSRP of the coupe
GTS
based on the German site?
It was already announced. It's on the MT or R&T articles. I forget. Not on the
Porsche
web site yet.
I forget the exact number but something like 119k + shipping so just over $120k.
Everything was predictable. Price, options, HP, etc.

Re: Ofifcial 991.1 GTS Thread
I certainly agree about chasing technology and it's monetary costs!
I'm still driving my 2013 Boxster and I don't see that car going anywhere in the future but I don't disparage the 718 models.
The new GTS sits 10mm lower than my C4S which is a daily driver now on snows.
But i expect that the next gen 911 will have the 8 spd PDK and larger Info screen from the Panamera.
Maybe time for a Turbo S with newer turbo design?
Frankly I can find no turbo lag in the 991.2 C4S and only a light whine which does not concern me on the least.
Only time will tell but for now, I like my investment in the 991.2 C4S!-Richard
"
Do you believe the water cooled generations, that is, 996, 997, 991 "in general" insist that "their" generation is better than the current production cycle?"
To answer your question succinctly, yes.
To elaborate, just read the comments about how better a NA engine performs and sounds, lack of turbo lag and whine. Sometimes a new generation is in fact not as better but in this case the 991.2 is clearly superior to previous water cooled generations, unless you of course own a previous generation and then........
I hear all the comments but then at the Track, "that sure is fast!".
I always thought the purpose of a sports car was to go fast, apparently not, seems rowing through the gears with the oldest thing you can find is the best!
-Richard
Hmm, OK not my experience except from "some" 997 owners. We are not talking boxster/Caymans here that lost 2 cylinders.
I always thought the purpose of a sports car was to go fast, apparently not, seems rowing through the gears with the oldest thing you can find is the best!
This is a good question. Many younger people have no clue as to what a sports car is supposed to be. They think a Corolla with the sport suspension is a sports car of a 4 door sedan is. A really good reference for this is Jack Baruth, a member here,
No One Knows What "Sports Car" Actually Means Anymore
Sports cars have very strict definitions and a 911 is most definitely, at the purists level, NOT a sports car.
I know that's sacrilege to 911 owners, myself included, but 2+2 configurations do NOT meet the definition of a sports car. A GT3(RS) without back seat is a sports car. Of course Boxsters, do which are two seats, ragtop, and raced. That is "raced" in the sense of used to competition. Of course, few people actually race their "sports cars" anymore. Safety regulations and such, as you note, and its not like "back in the day". So emulating road racing might be more appropriate and ragtop and coupe acceptable.
"... the "sports car" name was used for something that was meant to be an antidote or alternative to traditional sports cars—see "911, Porsche" and ... This depresses me;
a Porsche 911 is certainly not a sports car.
I know. I own one. A Boxster, which I also own, is definitely a sports car."
[bold face mine]
I believe he is correct. I've owned several and no 911, other than the GT cars, are sports cars in the purist sense. Caymans are. Its VERY unfortunate that people throw the term "sports car" around as they see fit when there are real definitions. Pony Cars, Muscle cars, sedans, and the like are NOT sports cars any more than a Toyota Corolla with an S trim level. Mr. Baruth says it best
The word "sports car" doesn't mean "car that I like and think is really cool." ...
If everything is a sports car, then nothing is a sports car."
Sorry, that's all philosophical but important to understand the terms so we are speaking the same language and a 911 is not a sports car, so your question ...
I always thought the purpose of a sports car was to go fast, apparently not, seems rowing through the gears with the oldest thing you can find is the best!
Yes, it is. Sports cars are meant for competition. And the GT3(RS), and past and upcoming GT2(RS) (sans backseat), are and will be sports cars. And PAG recognizes them as vehicles meant for competition as the cars from which the WEC cars are homulgated (except the 991RSR which was homogulated from the 991S because the GT3 was catching on fire
but you get the point). It's not an accident these cars have no back seat and are the track cars, meant for the track. Meanwhile, the non-weissach cars (i.e, the normal production cars) are not regardless of the fact of whether or not they are used in HPDE. PAG has designated their GT cars as their track cars. Therefore, yes indeed, rowing though the gears and enjoying the cars for what they are, that is production 2+2 vehicles that many consider to be GT (i.e., Grand Touring) cars, is indeed important.
We don't own sports cars. We own Grand Touring cars. Both by traditional definition and by reading the definition of a Grand Tourer. See Dawson
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_tourer
The engines "should be able to cope with cruising comfortably at the upper limits on all continental roads without drawbacks or loss of usable power."
"Ideally, the GT car should have been devised by its progenitors as a Grand Tourer, with all associated considerations in mind."
"It should be able to transport at least two in comfort with their luggage and have room to spare —
probably in the form of a two plus two (
2+2
) seating arrangement."
The design, both "inside and out, should be geared toward complete control by the driver."
Its "chassis and
suspension
provide suitable handling and roadholding on all routes" during travels.
Note the 2+2 requirement. I submit that Yes, sports cars are meant to "go fast". But a 911 is not a sports car to many people. Rather, its a GT, an opinion many owners might object to but it has porked out. it has gotten bigger, larger, heavier, and it has become very hard to justify the bloated size as a sports car. I owned an air cooled 911 and the difference from picture is ENORMOUS. Even the Cayman was a tank in size. They are huge. The FIRST thing my wife did was to crawl into the back of the 991 and say
"this is huge, its massive",
and yes compared to an air cool car, its a boat.
Just saying ...
No One Knows What "Sports Car" Actually Means Anymore
Baruth. He is funny.
I always thought the Miata is an exemplar of a 'sports car".
My Boxster S comes close and is so much faster and more capable.
On topic, these new 911s are very, very nice. The GTS is a heap of change. The price of two Corvettes ( Grand Sport version). GT cars.
Yes, the
GTS
is pricey...but if one gets carried away with options on a base
Carrera
the price can get into
GTS
territory. I wish there was a more aggressive body kit (like Aerokit Cup) on the 991.2s.
My salesman is apparently still convinced he can get me to buy a
911
. He sent me a link to the configurator this morning, and presumably will send me to yet another
Porsche
/dealer-sponsored track day (with GTSes) to see if third time's a charm.
$143.6K configured for a rear-drive variant that actually "undoes" a lot of the
GTS
stuff for a bright and happy looking package. Bet it'd be a helluva GT car, but... 405lb-ft in a
911
that doesn't have "Turbo" on the back and foot-wide rear wheels. Oi. We're also quickly approaching 200mph in what most would still call a "normal"
911
[1]. Rear steer in the 991.2S felt like witchcraft with how eager they are to dive bomb apexes, but honestly it all felt like bringing a minigun to a knife fight. I've been in 2-seat roadsters with reasonable amounts of tire for 75% of the years I've been driving, and I don't think I'm capable of really doing anything else anymore. Even Goof Car #2 is going to have skinny tires.
Plus the $50K spread buys my 918-style seats, better brakes, better cooling, completely pays for engine rebuild #1 in which I do old school hot-rodding (all 991.1
GTS
internals) while we're in there, all the lightweighting that requires part swaps, and underbody aero.
It's neat, especially in Miami Blue with the Espresso/Cognac leather, but I think I'm good.
[1] Granted, a Corvette does 190 nowadays and a fuggin'
Boxster
(Spyder) can just barely touch 300kph (186mph) top up, 290kph (180mph) top down.
Fun fact. A 991.2
GTS
is both longer and wider than a 1984 Plymouth Voyager/Dodge Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country SWB and SWB LE...and only 110 pounds (50kg) lighter if you spec a manual transmission and RWD.
Same with the Ford Aerostar. When is the
911
going to get 3rd row seating and a sliding 3rd door?!
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
