Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have no idea when it was last filled - he drove it less and less until it sat.
Leading evidence: 'Fill he drove it less and less until it sat' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill could have been 2 years ago' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The local Porsche dealer installed a new battery and changed the oil/filter.

The previous owners mind seems sharp, but then it isnt, so the last fill could have been 2 years ago.

I tend to avoid gas treatments, but I can get fresh gas in it within 5 miles of pickup and wondering if I should add something like Sea Foam High Mileage or just fill with premium ethanol-free gas?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought a 2001 Carrera from a fellow who had to stop driving due to dementia. He is a long time friend of my friends who have known him and the car for a long time. It had not been run in over a year and was sitting inside a garage in the desert. It had been driven less than a thousand miles a year prior to the 2024-25 sitting.
The local Porsche dealer installed a new battery and changed the oil/filter. The car was regularly serviced at the dealer and the service manager said there was no point in doing a PPI because of their knowledge of the car and the inspection they did at the oil change.
I decided against driving it 1400 miles to my home. There is just under a 1/2 tank of gas left and I need to get it 20 miles from the transport drop off to the local Porsche guru. I tend to avoid gas treatments, but I can get fresh gas in it within 5 miles of pickup and wondering if I should add something like Sea Foam High Mileage or just fill with premium ethanol-free gas?
On one shoulder is a little voice saying, "don't **** with it, put it on a trailer and have it dropped of at the guru's place". On the other shoulder the voice says, "drive it, the Porsche dealer inspected it with a 1400 mile drive in mind and said it was ok."
The guru is going to go through everything, and I am planning on new tires even though they only have 3000 miles, they are sun cracked due to age.
Dry rotted tire is enough reason to make me want to trailer it rather than driving 1400 miles. A highway blow out would be a terrible way of starting a Porsche ownership
Don’t use anything but BG44K or redline gas treatment or driven treatment on a full tank of gas before you ship it
then drive the car briskly till the fuel light comes on fill with fresh fuel and have a beer and a cigar gazing at your machine 😎
MHO...
You say hasn't been driven in
over
a year and the tires are dry rotted.
So we know its been over a year since its been started, but no idea how long its been since the last fill up...? Year Old+ fuel has a tendency to lose octane and pre-ignite/detonate. And has probably formed varnish in tank/pump/sender, depending on fuel level.
Dry rotted tires can and do come apart fast and easy with just a little use.
Its a gamble to just use the 24 year old car before a tank drain/refill with 93octane, techtron/seafoam/etc. And with old dry rotted tires. And at least a quick go thru...
But its your call....
It has Michelin Pilot Sports, which have plenty of tread depth, the age cracks are right at the transition of sidewall to tread. Ive had these tires on a vehicle I used to own and thought they were terrific.
I raced motocross, (and survived!), and that engine would complain about 2 month old gas. I have no idea when it was last filled - he drove it less and less until it sat. The previous owners mind seems sharp, but then it isnt, so the last fill could have been 2 years ago.
He knew he had the IMS bearing done, but couldnt remember and lost the paperwork. Then one morning he called and said Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara did it. Bingo! They remembered the owner, sent me the paperwork, and this is a 2001 dual row IMS with the LN Solution.
it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and I will be unlikely to sleep tonight in an adult version of Santa is coming on Christmas Eve.
I think there is a typo in here. LN Engineering didn't have a solution for the IMS bearing in 2001. But if it is the IMS Solution, you can verify it by looking under the car. for the oil feed line from the oil filter.
@996.x
, congrats on the car. It would be good news if you have the LN Solution. One less preventative item that you need to address.
Fwiw, getting a new set of tires makes alot of sense.
But the first thing I would do is replace your water pump. The last thing you need is for a piece of the fan blade to break off and lodge in the heads which creates heat and a crack in the heads. Then replace it every 5-7 years.
The second thing I would do is drop your sump to see whats in it, cut open the oil filter to see whats in it, and while you have the sump apart, scope the bores to see their condition. Then run great oil and start an oil testing program to measure engine conditions.
Then comes all of the 24 year old refresh items such as upgrading your AOS, etc. As well as all of the upgrades you will eventually dream about.
Enjoy the 996. Nothing better.
She arrived today, her hair was a mess from being transported 1400 miles. The trucking company was awesome to work with.
The gas smelled like it was reasonably fresh, so I topped off the tires with my portable inflator (Dewalt - thank's YT Project Farm) and drove it to the guru. She ran strong. New tires are on the way.
Christmas in April. Let us know what the technician is suggesting for her and we will have plenty of opinions. Even if you don't do all the work that is needed to restore/refresh parts, you might order all the parts before the tariffs kick in. That way, even if you have to budget the work over 2 or 3 years, you won't have to pay even more for the parts.
Richard has it, (I live in Idaho). The first thing he said was , "...those tires". I should hear the full report in a day or two.
I had to jump on the freeway (70 MPH speed limit) and rode 'er to the top of the torque curve through the gears. So completely sweet. The smile coming from the drivers seat blinded on-coming traffic for 5 miles on a 3 mile straight. The local news channel was trying to figure out if it was a meteor.
