I had both the RMS and IMS seals replaced under warranty in Feb 2011 just before my warranty expired (at the time the RMS was only weeping slightly) and since then I have noticed the car has used a lot more oil (before the seals were changed it didn't drink a drop of oil in 2000 miles, since the RMS/IMS work the car has 'used' 1.5 litres in 1200 miles).

He cleaned off all the oil junk with some kind of cleaner so we could get a better look and we discovered that the actual leak is coming from the that part that was covered in oil originally.

I'm hoping its just a seal gone or that the part is inexpensive and not a big job to replace touch wood.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys
My car is a 2006 997.1 CS2 but I was hoping somebody with knowledge here might be able to help me. When I went out today and backed my car off the driveway I noticed a patch of oil left in the area of the drivers side rear wheel under the car. I had a look underneath the car from the back and can see an area saturated with oil from where it is dripping slowly.
I have taken 2 photos and uploaded them so hopefully someone will know what is the likely cause of this leak? I had both the RMS and IMS seals replaced under warranty in Feb 2011 just before my warranty expired (at the time the RMS was only weeping slightly) and since then I have noticed the car has used a lot more oil (before the seals were changed it didn't drink a drop of oil in 2000 miles, since the RMS/IMS work the car has 'used' 1.5 litres in 1200 miles).
I am not completely sure that the car hasn't been leaking oil for a longer time period as I may not have noticed the patch before.
I am out of warranty now, is it possible that the RMS/IMS seals were not replaced correctly or is the area that the oil is dripping from completely unrelated?
Thanks in advance for any help.
That's nowhere near the RMS/IMS area. Difficult to say from the photos, but it looks like it might be weeping from somewhere highr, and running down. Possibly a cam cover seal or one of the chain tensioner sealing rings?
Oil consumption that high is a bit of a worry. Is it smoking? The 3.S engine is one which is susceptible to scoring of the bores on cylinders 5/6. Where are you located? Anywhere near Bolton and I'd give Hartech a call and get them to take a look with a borescope.
Despite it being out of warranty now, presumably the OPC network give some time-based guarantee on work done, so it may be worth taking it back to see if it was an incorrectly fitted seal... though if Richard says its not in the right place, I doubt that is would be that.
Hi Guys
Quick update I took the car to a local mechanic mate of mine earlier today and we took a look under the car properly.
He cleaned off all the oil junk with some kind of cleaner so we could get a better look and we discovered that the actual leak is coming from the that part that was covered in oil originally. The oil is not leaking from somewhere further up in the engine bay as once we cleaned it we could see that there was corrosion/rust on that part which after 20 mins started to weep oil again.
Does anyone know what that actual part is that I have highlighted in the attached photos? I'm hoping its just a seal gone or that the part is inexpensive and not a big job to replace touch wood.
The car is currently leaking about 20 ml of oil a day. Any tips on how to go about replacing the part would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. The car is not smoking at all and there is no soot on the exhaust pipes to suggest it is being burned.
That's the "Tandem pump" which is a combination scavenge pump and vacuum pump, driven from the camshaft. I believe they can corrode on the vacuum side. They are about £300. There is a large 'O' ring seal that seals the mounting face, but if it is weeping from the corroded point, I think you might be in for the worst.
Thanks for the info Richard, I was given the following info from a different forum saying that the part in question is either the Oil Pump or Oil Extraction Pump. I have attached the image that the person who said it was this uploaded to show it from some kind of manual. Is the Tandem Pump the same thing with a different name? Also if it is the pump that has corroded, what kind of labour cost am I looking at to get it replaced? Its starting to look like a very costly oil leak
Hi for some reason its not showing the image, please use the link below to see the images that I mentioned thanks.

Yes. There are two scavenge pumps (extraction pumps), one on each head, to return oil to the crankcase. The one on bank 2 (cyls 4-6) incorporates a vacuum pump, hence is called the Tandem Pump.
Hello all,
Hope its OK to restart this old thread.
Unfortunately I have the same problem on my 05 997C2s. The Tandem pump needs replacement.
Does anyone know if this can be done without removing the exhaust? I can easily get at the two lower torx screws, but I am not so certain about the top two. Has anyone attempted this?
Thanks.
I doubt anyone on this forum has tried it, as 996's don't have the tandem pump!
However, if you drop me an email, I'll see what I can find in the workshop manual and attach it to a reply.

] well that's a relief!! I was starting to worry about another "weak point" - but all I have to worry about now is:- a) RMS failure b) IMS failure c) Scored cylinder liners d) Oil separator splitting e) Coolant tank splitting f) A/C Radiator corrosion.
Richard I've just received my copy of your book and I must say that is worth every penny.[
