My brother is looking to buy a 2005 911 S, Launch Edition and there seems to be what might be "funky" information from the DME. The car is modified but I don't have the modification list with me.
Range 1 = 12274, 6318.5 h
Range 2 = 886, 6318.4 h
Range 3 = 112, 6314.8 h
Range 4 = 24, 394.1 h
Range 5 = 1, 167.8 h
Range 6 = 1, 167.8 h
Operating hours counter
-2775.900 (
yes, that is a "-" in front of the hours
)
Total distance
36336.000
odometer reads 23259 miles
The main questions are:
1. Is this car safe to purchase, based on this information?
2. What's up with the numbers and are they normal?
Thanks.
Based on just the info you posted I'd say the car is *not* safe to buy.
The numbers show the engine mostly experienced an overrev due to a missed upshift, that is instead of shifting from 3rd to 4th the driver grabbed 2nd.
Not good.
If the dash in front of the number is correct, that is if it is *not* an artifact of the tool that was used to pull the numbers from the DME -- and I can't fathom the reason why it should be correct (but let me think on this while I type the rest of my response), this suggests the DME has been tampered with. Possibly a 'flash' or a 'tune' has been applied.
Or someone attempted to 'hack' the DME and remove some hours of run time. This suggests then the odometer might have been tampered with as well.
With all those overrevs this suggests the car was tracked (and badly?) and I would avoid the car like the plague.
Still can't see how that number can be a negative. AFAIK all counters like that use an unsigned number that ranges from 0 to 65535. In some cases the DME counter will reach 65535 and stick there. There is no reset back to 0 again, unless some special steps are taken or some other event occurs (like a CEL comes on).
Advise your brother to walk away from this car.
There's always another car.
Sincerely,
Rockster.
Thank you very much for your insight. Not only are the overrevs concerning, but the resale value down the road might be affected as well. Most P-car owners like their cars to be pristine.
