Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Unless, of course, they dropped the engine out, in which case it would have been sensible to at least check the RMS, IMS seal, and clutch.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Would that make replacing/checking the IMS easier? And what is the part number 996 105 051 58 for? Its some sort of tensioner, but what exactly I don't know?

POST 2Original post

When you say changing the IMS, what do you mean? The seal, the bearing, or the shaft itself? That part is the Variocam solenoid from 3.4 engines. It adjusts the cam timing by acting on a tensioner on the timing chain, effectively shortening it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its just that my car 10k ago, had both variocam replaced and each time had tensioners as well. I guess I was just wondering if they would have taken the opportunity to look at the IMS while they were in there. Thanks for the info [ ]

POST 4Original post

No, they wouldn't normally have checked anything to do with the IMS. Unless, of course, they dropped the engine out, in which case it would have been sensible to at least check the RMS, IMS seal, and clutch.
