Costs: As I run a Boxster now I have an idea of what to expect from running costs & budget for £1500-£3000 a year including servicing, brakes, tires all in, is this realistic for a 6-8 year old 996?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, first post... I presently drive a 986 Boxster & am considering getting either a 996 or newer 987 & have a fewq's: Convertible hood: I love driving a convertable but couldn't live with a plastic rear window, hate them. When was the change to glass made, was it after the facelift in 01 or for the 997? Is there a model year to look out for in the ads? Engine: I'm au fait with the various engine failures that this engine can have, with IMS, slipped cylinder liners etc. With Boxsters the view is the latter the better and if buying an older one, higher miles is a good thing, post 50,000. Does a similar rule of thumb apply to 996's, should the 3.4 be avoided etc? General faults: With the boxster the main problems are tiptronic transmition, RMS, cracked coolant header tank, broken radiators & air concondensors, cracked plastic rear screens (see above), engine issues (see above), and rattles caused by heat shields. Are these issues repeated & known in 996's which share many parts, and are there any others unique to the 996? Costs: As I run a Boxster now I have an idea of what to expect from running costs & budget for £1500-£3000 a year including servicing, brakes, tires all in, is this realistic for a 6-8 year old 996? Obviously group 20 insurance will be higher & tyres are wider etc. I'd get all servicing done by my local indi, JZM. Thanks all for your time & help! Thanks all.

POST 2Original post

Hi Perlman, welcome to the forum. I was in a similar situation to you and was pondering between a 987 and a 996. I chose the latter 8) I think the plastic rear window was replaced with a glass rear screen in 2002 with the facelift model. 3.6 vs 3.4 - the bigger engine is regarded to be slightly more reliable. Yes there are RMS issues with either engine but sadly these failures are always more publicised than the successes which scares away a lot of potential buyers. Budget - I think £3000 is more than enough! Other issues - I've not heard of many of the faults you state that may be common with Boxsters. Radiators would need replacing if leaves have started to rot on them (frequent cleaning of the frontal air intakes would alleviate this problem). Tiptronic issues - not heard of any; heat shield rattles - maybe but then they are easy to fix; air-con - only needs regassing when it's not doing its job properly. Overall running costs should not be excessively high, these cars are suprisingly economical (at the bread & butter end of the 996 spectrum) and amazingly good fun to drive. Hope a little of the above helps. Let's see some pics of your car  ~ Maxie

POST 3Original post

Agree -As long as you get a good car to start with I think 2k would be sufficient and 1.5k pa if you dont need any major works (such as pad/discs, rads in the same year).
