Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To your point, yeah actually I was leaking oil and the mechs recently just found the cause and fixed it, so I expect oil consumption will decrease as well.

POST 1Original post

Hello wonderful people, I've had my 987.1 Cayman S for the last 10 years. Bought at 67k miles and daily driven it to now 165k. What an amazing blast, incredible machine! But in that time, I've had a comical amount of things go wrong with the car (transmission died, cats replaced, many AOS ', brake booster , and many others) to the extent that I've paid more in maintenance than the price of the car. No track days, and I live in California with great mechanics at Carrera Motors in San Mateo who've done an amazing job and always used LiquiMoly 5w-40. I finally did my first used oil analysis to see if there was any evidence of bore scoring. I always thought it would be ironic if everything had gone wrong with the car except the worst thing. The results came back suspiciously better than I expected. I figured every 987.1 would have some bore scoring at this mileage, but this seems quite clean? Nickel however did show as 1 vs. 0 average, and I've added 3qt of oil over the last 4k miles. What do you think, am I missing something? Have the gods smiled upon this car after my frequent cash sacrifices? Or do the UOA tea leaves bode something more sinister?

POST 2Original post

Report looks great, as they said. However, I am concerned with the makeup oil you've listed - 3 quarts? That's quite a bit for 4000 miles. It's within "spec" but as a comparison, my 107k mile 2010 ( 987.2 ) uses none. So that would concern me. Oil choice is great, from what I've heard... just surprises me that a product called " LiquiMoly " has so little molybdenum, but that's fine. Zinc is also within the levels I see on other oils. Nothing wrong with what I'm seeing... so keep on with it. High TBN would tell me to keep the oil in there longer. HOWEVER, I know other S-owners claim that more frequent changes are called for on this motor, because of the bore-scoring, so you do you. In the end, nothing wrong to see here... all looks great. Honestly, other than bore-scoring, these motors run a long time, so what you're seeing seems to agree!

POST 4Original post

Thank you! Great to hear you're seeing no oil consumption at 107k miles, that's fantastic. To your point, yeah actually I was leaking oil and the mechs recently just found the cause and fixed it, so I expect oil consumption will decrease as well. I do wonder though if the oil loss from this issue + my adding oil may have diluted the sample. But I can't imagine it would have made a huge difference.

POST 5Original post

That's great, appreciate you sharing. Nice to see another positive report!

POST 6Original post

Hi @a3imani - Your report looks fine and I'd just go drive it. Blackstone is great because they're all about science and hard data points -- so you can rest easily. Although you signed up a few years back, we'd love to hear more about your car over in the new members section, especially with photos of your ride! Cheers.

POST 7Original post

Good to hear there are others just using their 987.1 S as a daily. I've had my 2008 since new. (Well, it sat on a dealer lot in Michigan for 1 year before I grabbed it at the $48k number that seems a floor.) I've had one AOS leave me stranded. My mechanic proactively replaced the water pump. I lost the A/C radiator to a rock while on a trip, but that didn't leave me stranded, of course. Other than that, the car is practically a Toyota — well, except it's fun to drive! I proactively upgraded shift cables (and shifter) with Racing Numerics, so have no fear of the transmission leaving me stranded. Speaking about the transmission to the original poster, do you have an automatic? Or, did your shift cables decide to detach? What happened? Other than shift cables, I haven't heard of any problems ever with the transmissions. I'm at 98k miles right now and am looking at my second brake replacement, which seems like much more frequent than any other car I've owned. I'm wondering if I should try to find 3rd party to get less brake dust. Anybody have any opinions about non-OEM brakes for 18-inch wheels and on-road use?

POST 8Original post

Hey there, thanks for sharing your experience! Oil analysis looks promising. Maybe you've got a unicorn engine?

POST 9Original post

Thank you! It would be the ultimate irony given my maintenance experience, but I'll gladly take it.

POST 10Original post

Great to hear you're daily driving yours as well! I've only been stranded once after a spirited drive around Alice's in Woodside. Coolant pipe burst, but thankfully in a spot with cell reception! My transmission started slipping gears, and then my mech found metal shavings in the transmission fluid. I don't know exactly what was wrong, but something was grinding against something. After evaluating the transmission rebuild vs. salvage route, I opted for the rebuild and am happy I went that route. Much cheaper, faster, and no difference in performance. Hopefully you'll never have to make this choice!

POST 11Original post

I thought it would be interesting to have a specific thread for everyone to post their oil analysis, talk about the results and to see changes in engines over time (for any model, not just 987). Hopefully others will find it interesting as well. https://www.planet-9.com/threads/oil-analysis-post-yours-here.256683/
