Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I said I didn't need the courtesy car (thought it would be some crappy Fiesta or something), as they collect and deliver (and take the time to explain the work - even bought back the old bits that they had replaced)...
Leading evidence: 'Replace )' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Read up a little more on this and the only clue that I can find that seems linked would be mild suction on the oil cap when removing it with the engine running - does this sound right or is that normal?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have just had my car serviced and the OPC has recommended that at some stage I have the oil Seperator replaced.
I have done the usual searches and have not noticed excessive oil consumption or any blue smoke yet - is it something that is worth having done immediatly or waiting for some signs - or are the signs too late??
Hello
Why have they recommended that to be replaced ?
We have only ever replaced them when they have gone faulty which is not as often as you would think.
Mike

OK - satisfied myself that the air oil separator does need replacing. Suction from the filler cap and slight drip onto the left exhaust...
The job looks to be mainly labour at about 7-8 hours and with OPC labour rates that bumps it up a lot.
1. Does the labour time sound about right?
2. Any recommendations of Indys locally to Milton Keynes / Bedford or is it worth haggling with the OPC on labour rate without sounding like a cheapskate!
It's an engine-out job for an OPC. I believe it can be done without, but it's a lot of faffing around, and you need to have hands like midgets on arms like a gorilla. It's located at the top of the engine, at the front end of the engine compartment.
I've heard some good things about RPM, and they certainly seem to be amongst the cheapest:

There have been a few cases of OPCs price matching, so it is definitely worth trying.
Many thanks Richard.
I had a fantastic response from ProMax Motorsport today and they are quoting the job at 2 hours labour!! Makes quite a difference when 2 hours labour for them is the equivalent of 1 hour OPC...
Had the work completed today at Promax Motorsports in Buckingham - most impressed.
It took them 3.5 hours although that included sorting out a rocker cover problem as well. The car drives and sounds so much better, seems much more responsive as well.
Their Supercharged Monaro courtsey car is a blast as well!
Could I ask what made you certain it was the oil separator? I took my car around brands hatch yesterday and at the end of the day my car was clattering on the left bank and leaking oil from the left side. Apparently it's the oil separator pipe but the 1998 has a common problem with the oil separator so I may as well get both changed. I have it booked in at Parr for 11th october but am interested in your indy if they did it in 3.5 hours. i have a Tiptronic and have heard that the Tiptronic is an engine out job for the separator. Not sure how much Parr charge per hour yet.
Thanks,
Lee.
It was originally diagnosed by the OPC at service, I had oil on the passenger side and also vacuum at the oil filler cap on idle which was very noticeable when you removed it....
Yup, got that on mine too. I called the place in Bucks. A very long way from me but there again, i don't want to get ripped off by someone telling me the engine needs to come out. Is yours a tip? I have heard that the Tip is a definite engine out job. If so, what else can I get replaced that is a weak part while the engine is down? Worth getting the RMS done?
Big thumbs up for these guys too (no affiliation by the way)
They've done my last two services and have been brilliant at making sure I don't pay for stuff that doesn't need doing, and I've had no problems with anything that they've touched either.
I said I didn't need the courtesy car (thought it would be some crappy Fiesta or something), as they collect and deliver (and take the time to explain the work - even bought back the old bits that they had replaced)...
However, the Supercharged Monaro sounds fun... Think I might need the car next time!
I could not have been more impressed with them Wattie - seemed incredibly genuine, great communication and just proper car enthusiasts. I will certainly go back, if not just for the Monaro
It is certainly worth a call to Promax lmurthwaite, I hear that the Tip is trickier but I thought only an additional hour or so. Apparently doing either with the engine in is like building a ship in a bottle!
Well, La Rosa have just quoted me £960 +VAT +parts for the Oil Separator replacement job. Apparently engine and gearbox out.
One to avoid? any opinions/experiences welcome.
