I spun mine in the wet on day 4 partly due to not having checked tyre pressure and I've always had respect for the wet and my tyres ever since.

my assumption is that it was pierced on the friday (hence somehow the burning rubber smell) and deflated on the run on staurday up to the point of it coming off.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i picked up an 03 996 last weekend, and this weekend suferred a pretty scary tyre failure on the motorway... i'm interested to know if this is a real freak occurance or something more common. the car has 18 inch wheels and was fitted with brand new Continetal tyres- it was the rear right that failed. there was a strange smell of burning rubber i noticed on friday while driving at very low speeds- and when the tyre came off it was in one circular piece, with just two rims of rubber left on the wheel. i was in the fast lane of the motorway at the time and the handling hand been a little odd beforehand, but being new to the car i didnt think anytihng of it- the road surface (M20) was pretty horrible and i put it down to this. when we recovered the tyre it had what looked like an inch long screwdriver head right through it. my assumption is that it was pierced on the friday (hence somehow the burning rubber smell) and deflated on the run on staurday up to the point of it coming off. i'd be very interested to hear any comments on this- its my first Porsche, and i've only had it one week..!

POST 2Original post

Not a good start to Porsche ownership and sorry to hear it. You don't mention any other damage so glad things weren't worse for you, it could so easily been alot more severe. I've never actually heard of a tyre, especially a Porsche N-rated, just blowing for no reason. You say there was a screwdrive size hole or a screwdrive head?!!! Bloody hell. I think it's just bad luck and is definetly not a common occurance, it could have happened to any make/model of car...

POST 3Original post

Welcome I'm afraid your tyre incident is just bad luck... Wide low-profile tyres are a little bit more vulnerable to punctures, but it's really easy to run over something and get a puncture - I've got through two tyres that way (one was only 10 days old!) Don't let it put you off, get a new tyre, and enjoy!

POST 4Original post

Make sure your alloy isn't damaged as well!!! Not common occurrence though, similar thing happened in my BMW (also, with a relatively new tyre).

POST 5Original post

Welcome Glad you are ok and only a tyre to replace. Bad luck to happen so early in ownership but a good handling experience even if scary and you will always remember this. I spun mine in the wet on day 4 partly due to not having checked tyre pressure and I've always had respect for the wet and my tyres ever since.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for all the feedback- glad to hear it was a freak thing and not something to expect every time out! certainly was an interesting baptism in a Porsche- and a pricey one- but it wont put me off... its been a 25 year wait to own one since a white 911 SC flew past our car on an autbahn as a teenager... so i'm not going to let this dent the experience! cheers!
