This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I'd just buy a new one, thoroughly reinforce the inboard edge BEFORE it breaks -- after scuffing up the plastic and filling the entire area with epoxy on the back -- as much as one could -- just so as long as it still correctly seats.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

As you can see from the picture below, I'm breaking off the inboard edge of the footrest cover on my 987.2 . The photo is the back side, a bit hard to see the mounting tabs. I don't notice myself putting pressure on it, but this is the second one I've damaged. Part number is 997-551-611-00-01C. Before ordering another, I thought I'd see if anyone has found a more robust replacement. Something in aluminum would be just peachy. I've tried an epoxy repair to the previous one, but it didn't hold up. My alternate plan is to buy a new one and fashion a metal cover for it. I have lots of sheet aluminum and access to a shear and brake. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

First time I've seen this. Having done a bunch of plastic repairs these past few years, I'd consider doing the following -- which ideally might keep things simple. I'd just buy a new one, thoroughly reinforce the inboard edge BEFORE it breaks -- after scuffing up the plastic and filling the entire area with epoxy on the back -- as much as one could -- just so as long as it still correctly seats. YMMV on this, @A&Mengineer81 but that's my hot take. One other option is to just order a replacement from FCP Euro and not even do anything to it. I'd watch any left foot force, and if/when it breaks again, the replacement will be free with a lifetime warranty on this. No wrong answers here! Let us know how you get on with this.

POST 3Original post

I like your idea a lot. The new ones are under $20. I might try epoxy with a thin steel reinforcement. Keeps the stock look. I love FCP Euro's guarantee, but it's me causing the problem, not really the part. Thanks for the advice, and I'll get back with a photo when complete. Cheers!

Mine was fancy, they charged the dealer extra for ordering it. If it were my order, I don’t think I would’ve followed suit.

POST 5Original post

One things that I might consider is what exactly is going on with your left foot! I would think that once is a fluke, but a repeat is a trend. I'm guessing that there may be a lot of chronic pressure coming from your shoe that is causing it to fail? I'm less concerned about the part, TBH - it's more about strain in your left leg! (Former med student here...) Thanks - I think a combo of steel plus epoxy will absorb anything you throw at it. Looking forward to seeing how this shakes out -- and yes -- I too am a fan of the OEM stock look. Cheers.

POST 6Original post

After taking a close look, I'm pretty sure I know what's going on. I believe I'm putting pressure on the cover. It has an edge that wraps around the carpeted surface. The carpet presses against the rolled-over edge of the plastic, and eventually causes it to crack right along the vertical groove that is under the inner side of my left shoe. Hope that makes sense. I cut some .020" stainless to cover the stressed area. When I get the new part, I'll clean and scuff the surfaces and epoxy it together. Hopefully this, and and some closer attention to what I'm doing with my left foot will eliminate this self-induced problem.

POST 7Original post

This is the beefed-up new footrest. Pelican Parts is just amazing with their shipping speed. Hopefully this will be the last replacement. I'm still a bit perplexed with the problem in the first place. I've been driving manuals for over 50 years, so it seems odd that I would start pressing anything other than the clutch with my left foot. We will see. A few thousand miles of testing is in order. Aw shucks.
