POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I am installing a dash with the glove box in our 99 C4. But having trouble making sure I have everything I need before I rip the old dash. looks like I need a bracket in the back. What else?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A blow up diagram would be helpful of a mk1 and mk2 if anyone has them for the dash? thanks in advance

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 15028573

Gotcha covered on PM.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, I got it figured out. A bracket 996 552 753 00 LL and some crews and flat nuts. Should be simple to do. I have a hard time believing I am the first to do this?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 15030557

Think you're the first person brave enough to do this... I've seen people replace the whole dashboard (in a 986) for a glove box. More to the point I can't believe some early models don't have a glove box, why??? Is the 996 series the only 911 without one? Assuming you're going to replace that savannah coloured cover for a black one to match, right?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 15030931

Good point, forgot about that. Updated

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I am reupholstering the dash and glovebox to match what I have done in the rest of the car. Black charcoal leather with blue stitching. while the dash is out there will be a few items that I will be taking care too.

POST 9Original post

I got a glovebox style dash due to a dismantler shipping snafu, instead of the non glovebox one I needed. I posted here and was told that people had seen the late dash swapped into the early car, but they didnt do the work themselves. So, it seems doable, at least anecdotally. I didnt install it though, so I am no first hand help. I found the model year correct dashboard and installed it instead.

POST 10Original post

The 996 actually has 3 "gloveboxes"... 1 - Rear center console, 1 - in each door... Small? Yeah, but they very easily fit a pair of gloves, some napkins, a small flashlight, a multi-tool, registration/insurance card... How many gloves do you need to store in your car? I don't get the need to have a storage area in front of the passengers knees... Is it just me?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am well aware of some members opposition to the glovebox and the added weight that comes with it. My wife is not tracking the car, so winning races is not a concern. And as stated, I am taking the dash out regardless. And adding extra storage for minimal effort is never a bad thing.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 15031375

Nahhhh... No opposition Jim It's your car and you can do with it what you wish. In addition, if your wife wants it well, who am I to argue? I'm just confused as to why so many people make an issue of "the lack of a glovebox" when clearly there is none. Unless of course the said glove box needs to be in front of the passengers knees...Added weight? I for one couldn't care less

POST 13Original post

To each their own on the glove box but I personally am not sure why it wasn't included when the 993 had one. Guess we will never know...

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 15031461

This is my point exactly - It (they) was included - it just isn't where everyone expected it to be.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I'll do a write up on it when I put it in, which should be in the next couple weeks. It honestly looks like adding a bracket and that's it. She wants more storage, but to be honest (and I know there are track performance guys out there that will groan) I also think that the car needs it. Not just for storage, but the dash just needs more detail to it, and the box with the nice satin metal handle and the satin trim I got for it will go a long way to making the interior look more upscale from the Kia Sedona look it has now. I am working hard on making the interior look like it belongs in a $90 000 car (when new, of course). I have upholstered the pillars and centre console, and am now working on the doors. I am just now deciding if the new main console needs any blue stitching before I put it in. Looking for the bracket from wreckers now.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 15031532

Granted the "mostly plastic" interiors were pretty lame... Full Leather, not so much If you want to see "spartan", go take a look at the air cooled cars I love the deviated stitching btw

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 15031532

Looking forward to seeing before and after pictures if you care to share them. I always assumed there wasn't glove box because space was needed for the passenger airbag. Is there really space for a glove box and Porsche just decided not to have one? That seems like a pretty bizarre decision on their part. I'm not going to add one, but I'd much rather have a glove box than not.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will have pictures on how to do this for sure. Just need to get that bracket and such. Thanks for the compliment on the upholstery work. I enjoy working on the car, even if its not mine. And the airbag is the same from mk1 to mk2, so I have no idea what's up. Still, I am going to Porsche today to order the bracket and see if there are any other differences I didn't catch. But as far as I've been able to see, it is just teh addition of a bracket mounted on existing mounting holes in the dash frame.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any one able to help me on a couple things? The parts department couldn't help me. Their diagrams done show what I need. what are the part numbers for 7 , 2 , and 26 in the diagram?

POST 20Original post

Is a MK2 dash out of the question? Seems it might be easier to source a new MK2 dash and then move your MK1? Just a thought. Scrap that, it appears the dash part does not have any of the main support structure for the box.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I do have a mk2 dash. Just assembing all the parts I need to do the switch. Mounting points on the frame are the same.

POST 22Original post

Saw that, does the PET provide anything else?

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nothing. This is it. The bracket I have a part number and there are some on ebay. Just want to get the right screws and flat nuts to go with it. And I don't know what part 26 is. It is not on a mk1

POST 24Original post

When I pulled apart mine, I dont recall any rear support structure. There were only 5 screws holding the entire box in place. Three at the front into the dash and one on each side at the rear, 26 to me looks like it supports the dash rather than the box.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The back of the box didn't screw into anything, huh. .. hmmm. Then that bracket may be for support to compensate for the cutout for the box

POST 26Original post

Ooo possibly, sorry for the confusion maybe they did. :s wish I had taken photos!

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, if there is anyone out there that removed their box and took pictures, it would be greatly appreciated if they could share. I couldn't find anything on the internet.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I have found out what it is. #26 is a metal bracket that holds the metal knee protector/secondary dash frame in place on the right side of the glove box. Interesting bit, is that in the diagrams I have, it lists this metal knee protector/secondary dash frame as only in North American models. I then assume that non US cars don't have it. The glove box screws into the metal knee protector/secondary dash frame on the left side (through the plastic dash cover) but not on the right side it appears. Can anyone confirm if this metal knee protector/secondary dash frame is absent on non US cars?

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey nevermind. I got it all figured out now. the secondary dash frame is indeed only on U.S. cars, and the glove box does not attach to it. No need for it. Only the brace #27 is needed, and that's it. I'm good to go.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just finished recovering it. the fabric will smooth out.

POST 34Original post

Great work, thought that might be the case. When I had heard of my friend swapping the 986 dash I think everything came with the dash (RHD car).

POST 37Original post

Might want to check your ac diverter flabs that have been know to fail over time while you have it apart.

POST 38Original post

Following. Will be doing this myself (well, not the custom upholstery) next week!

POST 39Original post

Old thread! …. But I’ve just removed and replaced my 2001 UK 996 dash with a glovebox dashboard as mine had damage to the material the LH passenger air duct clashes with the glove box. I presume the glovebox dash has a different duct ?

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 15036276

Hi, I see it's been some years since you did this but I'm trying to do the same. Signed up to pm you only to realize I can't until I'm established lol. Anyways did you ever do a write up on the project? AI is telling me I need to replace knee bolsters, and a "passenger side end cap", the problem is none of the part numbers it's referencing are legit or they are for something completely different. I currently have a 996.2 dash, radio trim horseshoe, the center and passenger side ducting, airbag and glovebox assembly. I'm afraid to start because I want to complete everything in 1-3 days I don't want the project on hold while I have to order more parts. Anyways I don't want to take up your time I'm just hoping you could point me to any resource that could help

POST 41Original post

I see that @jim010 was last active about a year ago, so you might luck out and get a reply. From reading the thread it appears that the only part needed is a bracket, referred to several times throughout the thread. Good luck! Take pics!

POST 42Original post

I got started with this over the weekend, it seems like that bracket that @jim010 is talking about mounts to the V section of the retaining frame to the left of the glove box and the very end of the retaining frame on the passenger side. I think I can make it work on the end but my V section is missing the mounting points. Hopefully Jim010 checks back in on this and can help me out. Attached are some photos of my progress so far and photos of what I'm missing circled from a video I found online and a parts diagram. If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it, until I figure this out I'll have a hole where the glove box should be lol Slowly turning my gray interior black. I bought the interior off a totaled 996.2 turbo. I have a 996.1 C2 Had to replace the center ducting and passenger ducting to make room for the glove box and 996.2 horseshoe Behind the V section, hopefully this is just a bracket I can mount on mine. The 2 holes circled are where the glove box support bracket mounts. I took a screenshot from a youtube video This is the front of the V section section from a parts diagram. Behind what I have circled would be the mounting holes I need

POST 43Original post

I found one, unfortunately I'll have to remove the dash again to get this on. For anyone that wants to do this here's everything you will need: The V shaped part of the retaining frame from a 996.2 (pictured) The bracket mentioned earlier in this thread for glove box support ( 99655275300) The Ducting from the center to passenger side, this gives you an opportunity to re-foam the blendor The very end of the passenger side of the retaining frame from a 996.2, it's a little different it has 2 holes for the support bracket. I'm going to ignore this but if you want to do it 100% the right way you'll want it You have to remove the knee bolster, you can replace it with the 996.2 version but it's not necessary Use the phone prep plug's constant 12v source (or some other 12v source) to wire the glovebox light. The connector on the glovebox has 4 pins, your connector should have Pin 2 ground, pin 3 power and pin 1 should loop back to pin 4 There's a way to open up the glovebox lock and rearrange the internals until you find the right combination for your key, I couldn't figure it out but my key works now if I only put it in half way. That's all you need, and about a weekend of work Ducting needed from 996.2 to make room for glovebox and 996.2 horseshoe

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
