Suggestion

If that appears to be ok I would loosen the belt off and check all the pulleys for worn bearings.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, iam a new member and have recenlty bought a PB 2.5, but i have just noticed a whining noise, coming from the engine, the sound whines up and down i time with the engine revs.......... anyone any ideas... thanks

POST 2Original post

The first thing I would do is check the belt tension. If that appears to be ok I would loosen the belt off and check all the pulleys for worn bearings. Apparently if the water pump bearing gets a wobble to it it can seriously damage the engine. I am sure someone on here with more experience will chime in for you.

POST 3Original post

does it make the sound when in gear and/or in neutral?

POST 4Original post

Typically a whine comes from a belt...a oem replacement can cause it, because it does not mesh with the groves in the areas where it makes contact...water pump, ac unit, power steering. Now sometimes those units can be ready to fail and cause the whine. Have you checked the power steering fluid level and be sure you purchase the Porsche required brand here or you will be sorry...refill is (hee, hee...under the hood). To further check and isolate it...get a mechanics stethoscope from your local auto parts store. Have someone race the engine up and down while you listen for the point that you hear the whining. Good luck

POST 5Original post

You can also just use a length of hose, hold one end up to your ear and the other to what you want to listen to. If you haven't already, you'll need to learn how to remove the top & front engine covers. -james

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, After carefully working out how to remove the hood and top of the engine bay, i found the chamber to be totally empty. Filled up and now back to normal. Thanks again

POST 7Original post

So you were missing an engine? (Sorry, couldn't help myself )
