I took the battery to a local parts store and it tested "good" but "needs a charge."

Suggestion

If the parts store load tested the battery and checked out OK except for a charge, it should be good to go.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been spending a lot of time flying from cold destinations back to Denver. Never overnight. But when I get in my 996 it's slow to crank in the pre-dawn cold. I took the battery to a local parts store and it tested "good" but "needs a charge." They charged it for four hours, I brought it home, it now cranks perfectly. So what is going out? The alternator? The battery? What's common on these cars?

POST 2Original post

Before you start swapping out expensive parts, do some diagnostics. Check the alternator for charging voltage and load test it to make sure it is up to snuff. If the parts store load tested the battery and checked out OK except for a charge, it should be good to go. Consider keep the 996 on a good quality battery maintainer when it is not in use, which will keep the battery in full charge condition.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today was a big 996 day. I took the altenator down to Napa for a checkup and it was under voltage, but steady at about 11.5v. So I tossed it and replaced with new. Since everything was pretty much fine before it still is now. To celebrate I added a nice Alpine stereo today and put the poor old Decker on the shelf. If I every find my Whitesnake tapes I'm sure I'll want it back.
