Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think people do it for different reason, some may think it looks better, some may do it because they don't want people to know exactly what model they are drving, being as it's not a 911, that may be a reason.
'being as it's not a 911, that may be a reason.'
I realize this reason just now.......well...... they can bought 911 instead of Cayman S......
so they can't delete model designation.....
I think Cayman isn't a car for those people that would 911 but don't have $$$
Some people don't like advertising on their car, and consider it tacky. This extends to having the name of the car written on it, to having dealer plates or stickers affixed to their cars, etc.
The other reason for this is it is in a silver color and their is another option that let's you add it back in body color. Some people don't like silver / chrome accents (reminds them of big-old-cars) and prefer painted ody color.
I ordered my Cayman S with the 'delete model designation' forthree reasons: 1)because I think it will look better with cleaner lines, 2)it will not give me any trouble when I clean the car. I like to concours my Porsches and model designations etc can be difficult to clean around, and 3) I do not thing it is important to 'identify' the car by labeling it, I believe the Cayman S will not need any 'modeldesignation' to be easily identified. Those who know the Cayman S will not need it and those who don't, why does it matter, if they wonder what Porsche it is all they need do is ask, who knows maybe we can educate them and bring them in as a new Cayman owner. That would be fun.
I also took the delete option. I prefer a car's looks to be subtle -the 'Cayman S' designation is too big, and the 'S' too gaudy. And when you use wax, it always is the devil to get out of the crannies in the letters.
I'm hoping that it is not any worse to clean around the Porsche badges than on any other car. On my 2 Toyotas, there is not much work to get it clean around all of the badging on the car. I would be curious as to what kind of wax/polish people use and info on ease of use and shineability??
It is very problematic to clean around those letters... and I still haven't fully warmed up to the name yet (although I do like the gator associated with it). Maybe they should create a new 'gator' emblem? Instead of a horse on the crest, change it to a cayman! I'm really kidding guys.
I'll delete for three reasons also:
1. My Boxster logo broke while washing with terry cloth that hooked under the lower left edge of the B. ( They are just stuck on with adhesive)
2. After removing the rest of the Boxster logo I liked the clean look better. Also easier to clean/wax.
3. I think the name is a little goofy.
So will you all that have gone with the delete option feel o.k. when the base Cayman comes out? You have enough confidence to have an 'S' without the advertisment? I suspect so but there is that 'pride thing'.
Maybe by the time the non-S Cayman comes out, we can come up with alternative logos. Maybe a Cayman Club logo that also indicates the 'S' or non-'S' status?
I like the old naming conventions: numbers and races. Names like 911 carrera, panamera, targa. Boxster has grown on me! Cayenne and cayman may grow on me as well. Only time will tell.
I agree with Chuck, the numerical and race related names of the past seem more Porsche than peppers and gators. I have noticed many, including me and even dealers, tend to say Cayenne when intending Cayman, or the opposite.
Maybe they will go for a series of names beginning with Cay? That would really be confusing IMO but I suppose both names were market tested.
I am with Dean, I think it looks classy and cleaning around it would be the least of my concerns. Thank God we all have different tastes.

I actually quite like the name (it definitely suits the look and subtle designof the car) and think the car should wear it proudly.

Once the Cayman non-S hits showrooms, the "delete model designation" for the Cayman S would make it seem like a sleeper. Sorta like down-grading your badges on say, ur BMW ( ///M5 to 525i) or Mercedes( CLS55 AMG to CLS500) Might consider even adding the regular 'Cayman' non-S badges on to the Cayman S.
