Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use kit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend upgrade in my book :thumbs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Be carefull if you are replacing twin filament 55w/60w H4 bulbs with Xenon/HID, the kits are available as single or dual HID for H4 style cars, the single HID only upgrades the dipped beam (H4 55watt) and the non-dipped (main beam) is actually reduced to 35watts halogen ...

Do I have to change the whole headlamp unit if I wanted Xenons?

Suggestion
A few people on here have retrofitted Xenon upgrades to the existing Halogen light cluster using people like HIDS4U with varying degrees of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I'm not new, hard drive on my PC crashed and lost my previous settings, consequently wont let me sign back in with my old username. Dont understand why. Anyway have had to register with a new name but can still send PM to my old username (Kumaresh) which is apparently still active! Small matter.
My 03 4S has halogen lamps. Do I have to change the whole headlamp unit if I wanted Xenons? I understand that self leveling and headlamp washers are a requirement on Xenon cars out of the factory, but on retrofits the MOT guys are only concerned about beam pattern and light colour
Hi,
I don't believe it's an easy upgrade from Halogen to Xenon. A few people on here have retrofitted Xenon upgrades to the existing Halogen light cluster using people like HIDS4U with varying degrees of success.
Cheers,

I have used the kit from Alan at
www.aceparts.com
and aside from the minimalist instructions, fitting was actually dead easy & they do improve the lights enormously. Recommended upgrade in my book
As always with laws, there are the words & there is the practice. In practice, I know of at least 5 other people who have had these conversions on both 993 & 996 cars and have had absolutely no trouble either from the BiB or at MOT time. Obviously, there's always a small risk that some officious twit is going to get picky. Alan's conversions don't seem to alter the beam pattern that much and I've never been flashed for having blinded oncoming traffic.
How many trucks, vans & chavmobiles have you seen driving around with blue lights? I've seen loads & technically that is a complete no-no but it's not enforced & so people get away with it.

Nope, they're just the bog-standard halogen ones that I've converted to Xenon. TBH, when I had the proper Porsche Lightronics on my previous 996, I never did notice that they self-leveled. IMO, the lights were slightly better with Lightronics, but not worth the price of a full retro-fit to a car that hasn't got them.
