Suggestion

Check the current on the battery, if it's good the alternator shouldn't factor into starting.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, About three weeks ago I went to start my car and the ignition multi clicked at me and would not atrt the engine. I bought a new battery, fitted it and thought that was that! Just went to go out and the same thing happened agin! I have it on charge not and looks like I need a new alternator. Has anyone else had the same problem, can it be someting other than the alternator and how easy is it to fit?

POST 2Original post

Sounds like the alternator to me too. It is quite often the regulator pack which causes excessive drain. An exchange alternator from Porsche: £1000. From Euro car Parts: £300. Regulator pack: about £25. See: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/408495-alternator-repair-regulator-replacement.html

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Waiting for the RAC to turn up, I think it's the starter motor. Will let you know.

POST 4Original post

Check the current on the battery, if it's good the alternator shouldn't factor into starting. Starter motors normally start to sound a little strange before they fail, kind of like a swooshing sound. I'm not familiar with the location of the starter on the 996 having never looked for it. If you can get to it, this may sound a bit silly, but you can knock the starter motor with a block of wood and a mallet to try and free it, it normally works but won't last.

POST 5Original post

You got to remove the alternator to get to it.
