I had the top in service position to adjust my coilovers, and when I put the top back up, I heard a 'pop' as the top went into the fully closed (up) position.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the top in service position to adjust my coilovers, and when I put the top back up, I heard a 'pop' as the top went into the fully closed (up) position. When I looked in the stowage area, I found this part sitting looseon the driver's side. It doesn't appear to have any broken parts to it. Does anyone have an idea of where it attaches to the top mechanism, or what its funciton is?
Thanks!
Where did you find this? Is front stowage in the frunk? Does the top and still work and fit properly? If we disregard the part you found for a moment, I could believe a 'pop' is the breaking of the rivet that holds the top cable. AutoAtlanta.com has all the exploded parts drawings for our cars. You might go take a look there. I went and looked at all the convertible parts, but none of them seem to match.
Thanks for the responses. I found the part in the 'TOP stowage' area, since it came off the convertible top. I'm a little reluctant to try to put the top back down until I know a little more about the detached part.
I'll look at the shop manual and see how it attaches and what its function may be. Thanks for the picture- I'm trying to 'see' my piece in relation to the hinge. Maybe it's just a guide that keeps the fabric out of the hinge.
Stay tuned!
Good find! It's from one of the side flaps. Here's a different listing on ebay for a right side version.

Yes! That's the part! The piece that I pictured was not broken, but it probably broke of an attachment point from what's still on the car, so I'll probably have to buy the assembly.
Thanks! (I need the driver's side hinge)
In the spirit of completing the circle, I can report that I now own the Porsche replacement part that broke on my cabriolet. I'll be installing it in the next few days. Thanks to all who helped me narrow down what was broken, including picture
s that confirmed that the replacement part which doesn't look a lot like the illustration in the parts diagrams is in fact correct!
One thing that is still bugging me is that you had described the fail as a "POP". This means that something forced this piece out of place. Maybe one end of this piece came loose through wear and then got in the way of the top mechanism, or, something else in the top mech is out of place and forced the fail. Please check clearances carefully to make sure that everything else is working correctly before putting this in.
Right! I'm wrestling with that thought right now. In this thread the fabric itself is mentioned as a possibility, if some of the elastic is perished or broken:

Since the replacement part was $200 (a bargain by Porsche standards), I'd like to NOT see it make the same POP when I get it installed!
