In fact I know of loads of car dealers (even franchised ones) that are not able to buy anything into stock at the moment, at any price - no matter how desirable it is: They are so full of used car stock already, with an influx of Sept 1st part-exchanges, that they just don't have the cash or the space.

Suggestion

I was looking at changing my low mileage 964 for a newer model, either a 993 wide body or a late 996, I also checked what I would be given in part exchange and its just not worth part exchanging now, better off selling privately.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok I know the market is awful but! I'm looking to sell my 911 ... Need to change from a C2 to a Targa! A 1998 C2 in Ocean Blue. Savannah interior. 14000 miles!! Seriously! Sport Design Wheels that have just been refurbished with new Michelin Sports on them. Just serviced, with new brake discs and pads all round. Swissvax Mirage wax (zymol Vintage eqiv) detailing. It is like a new car inside and out. Obviously the odd mark/scratch! Being very picky! A top car. If I didn't need to swop to the Targa (long story) I wouldn't even think of selling it!!! I know the market is full of 996's but this is a bit special. Ok Ok it is mine so I am biased obviously! Now be nice people!! Whats a "sensible" price? and do be nice! .. anyone saying £15K will be really annoying me! Oh I just posted this on PCGB forum .. interesting to see the views!!

POST 2Original post

Depends on how fast you need to sell her ?? I would think somewhere around £22-25K, I know the miles are very good, but some may not like the trim colour and she is an early 996. Plus I am seeing facelift 996's @£26+.. Good luck with the sale, keep us posted !

POST 3Original post

I would love to say more, but I will be very surprised if you get more than about £18000 for it, unless you manage to stumble across someone who is blissfully ignorant of RMS, Intermediate shaft, cracked liners, etc... In the trade, I reckon you would be looking at about £12-14k tops: Anything petrol with a big engine, high maintenance risk, and anything other than the absolute safest colour combination (i.e. silver or black with black trim), runs the risk of sitting on a forecourt for months in the current climate. In fact I know of loads of car dealers (even franchised ones) that are not able to buy anything into stock at the moment, at any price - no matter how desirable it is: They are so full of used car stock already, with an influx of Sept 1st part-exchanges, that they just don't have the cash or the space. Sorry it's not what you want to hear, but this is possible the worst time to sell such a car since the crash of the late '80s. Are you absolutely sure you can't manage with the coupe?

POST 4Original post

Good luck with the sale, it is depressing looking at the current market value at the moment. please let us know what you get for it, I too have 98 C2 ocean blue Great colour. TB

POST 5Original post

Wattie.. Don't forget this car we are talking about has done 14,000 miles from new ! There are alot of topic's around with people saying there no going to pay £25k+ for a 993 with 70-80k when the 996 looks cheap at around £20-22k. Trade price, I think your right £15k ! If it was mine, I would SOR the car at 911virgin or Northway, they seem to be selling car still.

POST 6Original post

Good point about SOR Dan - probably your best bet. I may be wrong, but strangely I don't think the mileage is that significant with a 996: It is never going to be a collectors car I'm afraid, and I have to say the ultra-low mileage would scare the ***** out of me with no warranty, as I am convinced that the much-hyped engine failures are a consequence of short journeys at high speed with a cold engine. Sorry again, and I hope I'm wrong, but that's just my opinion.

POST 7Original post

Warranty is a good point too Wattie, Maybe worth getting a non OPC warranty and highlighting this in the advert when selling ?!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This would be an interesting debate IF IT WASN'T MY CAR!! Ok so how do I convince mr/mrs prospective buyer that I know these cars AND always allow the engine to warm up BEFORE driving it "as it was mean't to be driven"?? Do I show them the 66,000 mile pristine 944 that looks like it just came out of the showroom after 20 years? Do I drag Mark (Stirlings - Hi Mark) down from St Ives to explain its virtues? I bought the car from him. Top car. Top guy! Thats the problem!!! This is a car that has not had commuting 40/60 miles a day use. Hence Mileage. However the engine has been treated like the highly tuned thing it is! Ohhhhh ... no I scream!! This is an odd/funny one but a few years ago it was ... BUY A SILVER CAR THATS THE BEST COLOUR FOR RESALE!! Now most car showrooms and top end ones included are awash with Silver cars! Because everyone bought into this idea. Consequently if you go into a show room the last thing a car salesman wants is another Silver car as part ex cluttering up his forecourt!! Seriously!! Now people are buying almost bright orange fiesta/mondeo's ummm cant recal that colours name. Nice though. Tangerine Red?? ummm! My thoughts are you buy a car that you like? Especially in this "niche" Ocean Blue is gorgeous! Picks up so many colours especially with a good wax on it. It is pearleasent. Savannah .. hmmm you have to see it to appreciate it to be honest. But lets be honest! This isn't the family "hack" so its not going to get used and abused. I've thought about SOR and I'll investigate that one! It really is sad though. I truthfully do have that something different and it doesn't stand out from all those other ones that haven't been looked after as well! Wheres the bottle opener!!!! So between £18K and £22-£25K. Thought this might be interesting! Deep sigh!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

oh .. reason for swapping!! I'm a wheelchair user and when by myself I transfer in. Pull the wheels off my chair. They go on the back seat. The frame goes on the passenger seat. Elaspsed time. 2 mins! When with someone. Wheels and frame in back with seats down. This means sliding seat forward, negotiating the frame in the back. Wheels on top. Sliding seat back .. and so on!! Quite a faff , especially in the delightful summer weather we are having!! Elapsed time .. quite a few mins!!! Now you could say well the 911 isn't supposed to be a practical car! But it really is surprising just how much "stuff" you can get in for a weekend away though! Including the wheelchair! The Targa would just make life oh so much simpler/easier!!! Really does depend on whether I can take the "hit" A fellow poster on here is selling his Taga too!! Ideal as he .. like me .. is obviously a really nice bloke!! light hearted humour but meant somewhat seriously! Thats why I have the E class Merc for 2 dogs and wet muddy wheelchair on day to day bumbling around!

POST 10Original post

I was looking at changing my low mileage 964 for a newer model, either a 993 wide body or a late 996, I also checked what I would be given in part exchange and its just not worth part exchanging now, better off selling privately. However looking at the 996 market and the age of the car I think you will have a problem getting the true value of the car especially when you can buy later cars for well under £20K. The mileage really doesn't mean much especially out of warranty and is more of a beware issue than anything else (for me). I have seen cars the same age as yours with 80K on them for £13K but who would want to buy one of those at the moment, I think you would sell at £17995 I would be very upset if I was you at that price but somebody will get a good deal for the quality of the car if you are prepared to sell. Personally I would hold onto it and buy a targa to run alongside, then sell later. Bad News all round and its going to get worse. Good luck Jason

POST 11Original post

Sorry David... really... I have a 99 C4 with 104,000 miles on it, that I owe £20k on... I would love to believe that it is worth more than that to someone, with it's absolute mega-spec (£24k in options alone when new), but sadly I know I won't get that for it. I am just looking from the perspective of someone thinking of buying it... A collector will want to pay a little more to have a low mileage 993, so you will be marketing to someone who is an enthusiast looking for their only car probably, that is not brave enough to go for a 964/early or high-mileage 993. So you will be competing with dozens of quick cars (such as newish Impreza / Evo / Elise / Audi TT / Focus ST) with significantly lower maintenance cost and risk. There are a lot of ads in Porsche Post, etc for totally unrealistically priced 996s - that have been there for more than one issue  I have worked in the upper end of the retail motor industry for over 25 years now and my advice would be: 1.) Don't change at the moment! 2.) If you absolutely must change, SOR it through a specialist with a good reputation, and with a warranty of some sort. 3.) Advertise it away from the 'knowledgable' Porsche audience (e.g. local paper, and/or anything a 'chav' with money might read  ) Don't get me wrong about the colour - when I did some mystery shopping for Porsche many years ago, ocean blue with Savannah was the spec I chose as my own favourite (it's easier to lie when it's almost true  ). Unfortunately, Porsche have a habit of making interiors look like an explosion in a paint factory, so unless you fit a black steering wheel and trim to give a bit of contrast, anything other than black or dark blue interiors often don't even get an enquiry. I sincerely wish you the best of luck: If you do get close to £22k I will be chuffed to bits, as it will bring a mere glimmer of hope for me when I have to do something in January (with a large balloon rental to pay!)

POST 12Original post

Just read your last post - is it a Tiptronic? If so, I'm afraid that doesn't help...

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Geez Wattie!! Push the knife in a little deeper mate! Yes it is a Tiptronic too ... !!! Ok where's the razor blade? Now which way do I run the blade on my wrists!! I do know exactly what you mean and do take on board all you say! Just kinda hurts when you know its such a good car and its not going to be worth what .. well .. I think it is worth! All those economics lectures should have taught me something about market forces and so on....!! The worst thing is I don't want to make autotrader rich!!! So who do I go to then guys? For the best opportunity or SOR?? Henry at 911Virgin has lots of cars. Good or bad thing. You know as someone pointed out to me when I got my first car. You'll never have any money now! Sage words indeedy!

POST 14Original post

I'm really sorry David, but you did ask for the truth! I'm afraid the tiptronic will probably rule out the 'chav' market, but on the bright side, the tiptronics are almost exempt from RMS and Intermediate shaft failures I believe? I now think your car might appeal to a non-Porsche enthusiast who just wants a nice car (mid-life crisis? ) that's a bit easier to live with than an earlier model. Does the London Evening Standard have a motoring section? :?: Actually, this might be a good car for the Sunday Times classified.

POST 15Original post

It is an unfortunate fact about the values. I have a friend with a late 2002 Boxster with only 9,000 miles on it. He bought it because of Porsche's reputation of bullet proof residuals and luckily, he has no intention of selling it, but I daren't tell him what it is really worth because I hate to see a grown man cry.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
