Hello I am in California and am trying to get my car ready for smog. I reverted the car back to stock but cannot get my secondary air pump to meet ready status for smog inspection. I thought the tune may have coded out the air pump on startup so I went back to the stock
ecu
file.
Currently I am able to manually actuate the air pump with engine off, ignition on and it runs strong without issue and sends a successful execution value. I can also feel the air coming out of the
exhaust
so no issues with the turbine/motor within the pump. When I try to do the same with the engine running, even during a cold start scenario, it does not activate and sends a fail status regarding the actuation test. It is almost as if the actuation is being overwritten and not allowed to be carried out. I have never gotten any codes regarding the pump or any other issues, just a continuous not ready status regarding the secondary air status. For 07 vehicles the secondary air ready status is a requirement to pass smog inspection California.
I am not sure what could be causing the actuation issues with the engine on as there are no issues within the pump itself. On cold start I still get the increased idle I believe around 1200, then a drop to 900, then settles to 700ish.
Hi

- Welcome to Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum...
What device are you using to read the codes, and will it show the status of the secondary air pump? On most cars now the secondary air system is only turned on when the ambient temperatures are such that the car will be starting with a rich mixture. The additional air into the exhaust/cat helps to fire off that rich mixture, reducing emissions, SO - it might well be working exactly as it should. I'm not sure what the 2.7 emissions system does in that case, but that might be worth a bit of research before assuming something is wrong. When it doesn't activate the secondary air - is it registering an OBD-II error code? FWIW - the increased idle is seen on any cold engine start, and isn't done by the secondary air system, it's the electronic throttle keeping the engine at a speed where the exhaust/cat will quickly warm up.
BTW - it's tradition here to introduce yourself before asking the first question, but we do realize a lot of people stumble in here just looking for answers initially. When you have an opportunity, please visit:

Thank you for your reply, that is a great idea to create an intro post as well. It does seem a bit rude to hop into the community just to ask questions.
I am using a
Launch X431
tool, similar to
PIWIS
(less functions of course), to view the systems as well as run actuations. I bring up the elevated idle state of a cold start as this is when the secondary air pump should receive the status to activate, so during this phase I manually actuate the secondary air pump with the
X431
, but receive a failed status along with the pump not being able to activate, same situation after the cold start state wraps up and idle levels out to 700rpm. While the engine is off I can actuate the pump and have it run without issue, pump works fine as well as the
exhaust
lines being clear since I can feel a large volume of air exit the
exhaust
. No codes relating to this system nor any other systems within the
ecu
. I am not sure if manual actuation is not possible with engine running but it seems that other people are able to.
The main reason I am trying to manually actuate the pump with the
x431
is so the
ecu
can read a successful actuation of the air pump during the cold start phase and hopefully reach a ready status for the secondary air injection system. I have driven hundreds of miles and a did a bunch of cold starts followed by long idle periods with low ambient temps but the
ecu
fails to reach a ready status for SAI, all other systems reach ready status without issue.
I think I didn't express myself well enough. The ECU may prevent the activation of the secondary air pump (SAP?) if the ambient temps aren't low enough. It might prohibit that even if the system is told manually to activate it.
Can you activate it with the ignition on and engine not running using the Launch (or is that what you're referring to above)?
Do you have a
voltmeter
or even test lamp probe? It would be interesting to measure the voltage at the pump terminals engine off and engine on. Then repeat with the connector unplugged from the pump.
Sorry for the late reply. It isn’t getting any voltage at the pump unless I manually actuate it when the engine is not running. I will see if I can jump it at a relay rather than actuation from the
DME
, since that would force it on even with the engine running.
