Looking to find out what is involved with servicing the transmission on a
2008 Cayman S
Tip.
From what I can find it seems to be pretty easy. Drain the fluid, remove the sump, change the filter, clean the sump, reinstall the sump, and fill with oil.
I have seen that some service kits include new bolts for the sump and filter. Is it nessisary to replace all these?
The owners manual also states that I need 9.5L of oil which seems quite a lot to me. Can anyone confirm if that is right?
The owners manual also does not say what type of oil to use. I believe it is 75W-90 ATF, can anyone confirm that?
I plan on using all ZF parts for the service.
I'm pretty sure the ZF Tiptronic used some form of ATF.
Check what
FCP
recommends.
For anyone doing a transmission service and wondering the same questions, here is my take on it.
The total capasity of the tiptronic transmission oil is 9.5L, however you will only be able to change around 3.5L without some kind of special tool that likely only
Porsche
Service Centers have. The reason the tiptronic has so much more oil is that it uses the transmission oil to fill the torque converter, which manual gearboxes do not have. I plan on doing another trans oil change soon to try dilute some more new oil into the system.
The
Porsche
spec transmission oil from the best of my research was 75W-90 ATF, so I used that and It seems perfectly good so far, even with the mixing of the non
Porsche
spec oil and the original stuff from the factory.
I read that it is best to reset the transmission adapters(?) to let the
ECU
know that it has fresh oil and a filter, to have it run better and then it will relearn your driving style. I used a Maxidas scan tool to do this and it said that this function had not been developed on my year car (2008), so don't wory about doing this. It ran a lot better afterwards without resetting anything.
At 104,000km and 5 or so hard track days, my trans oil still had some colour in it and was a light gray colour, probably could have left it a while longer but better safe than sorry.
Edit:
Do note that the transmission sump bolts strip very easily, even torquing to the 10nm spec
IMPORTANT NOTE TO ANYONE SERVICING THEIR TRANSMISSION!!!
DO NOT use 75W-90 oil in the Tiptronic transmission. Unfortunately I have learned the hard way that this is the wrong oil. 75W-90 is used for the manual transmission cars. My car has now gone into limp mode and my local techician says I need either a new transmission or a tranmission rebuild.
Going to have to figure out where to go from here.
I tried.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) does not come in 75W90.
