Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

At the least, you’ll be able to see deeper into the opening where the head unit was removed to check for the source of the smoke.

Check your wiring, wiring methods to ensure all powered leads are crimped and insulated properly, and there are no exposed connections that may be shorting out.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I just removed the Bose sound system and upgraded everything. When i installed the battery and hook up the terminals I started the car then got a PSM code, smoke coming from under the driver side dash. I shut the car off and unhooked the battery ?

POST 2Original post

Yeah obviously you have a short of 12 volts to ground somewhere. You'll need to take it all apart and find out where it is. The blackened/melted area should show you the way.

POST 3Original post

Does it smell like burning wires? Since you just did work on the audio system and this occurred, it would seem coincidental that the smoke happened right after. Check your wiring, wiring methods to ensure all powered leads are crimped and insulated properly, and there are no exposed connections that may be shorting out. Most dead shorts will cause a fuse to blow. Maybe try pulling the fuse that powers the audio system and try restarting the vehicle, ready to shut it down immediately if you see or smell the smoke again. If that doesn’t occur upon restarting it, then that would point to a problem in the new installation. Or you could remove the head unit, leaving it connected and see if a restart of the vehicle causes any smoke from the head unit or surrounding areas. At the least, you’ll be able to see deeper into the opening where the head unit was removed to check for the source of the smoke. Could be anybody’s guess. Bad wiring, short, defective head unit or amp if one is present?
