I swapped the C2 for a C4S after about 3 years and have just defected from the 996 clan by changing to a well specced 997S.

Would have to agree that the tyres have been the expensive item so far (went from Bridgestones...nasty hard things to Michelin Pilot Sports...mmmmm) although my PCM has just gone pop so I'm awaiting with baited breath the repair bill in the New Year.

Had to wait another 22 years, until I had paid for the private schooling and universities before I could afford to buy and run the second.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just wondered what the average age of the 996 owners are, I myself am not YET an owner (hoping to change that in the next year or so aslong as things go to plan!!)
Currently aged 24 years.
you are only as old as you feel ! Or the woman you feel... hehe
Is it true by the way that the Carrera 2 is RWD and DOESNT have TCS? Seems slightly insane! hehe
As I understand it, Carrera 4 = 4WD and TCS and Carrera 2 = RWD and no TCS.
Both otherwise identical. (?)
All Carrera 4's have PSM (Porsche Stability Management) which incorporates traction control. TC was an option on C2s prior to 2000, and PSM was an option on C2s thereafter. This coincided with the introduction of eGas on the C2. Take a look at

where you can view our buyer's checklist and model history.
Thank you for your help richard, I've read alot of your posts which have helped alot already.
Im now just unsure now what mark to get, Im a tad concerned at the prospect of buying a 1998 or 99 reg due it the age.
Not to mention the 2001 + models seem to have a far nicer dash, steering wheel and seats also...
I need to go and see some really. Doubt the local porsche dealer will have 99, 02 or 04 reg carreras.
I think the C4 is goin to be the way forward for me though, as with my right foot I'm likely to end up in a hedge with RWD hehe
The C2 and C4 drive very differently, so you need to try both. Most people specced TC on C2s, so you won't have trouble finding one with it fitted. A C2 isn't as scary as you might think, even putting 300bhp through the rear wheels. The traction is phenomenal. Do a trawl of the independents, as they are the ones who have decent stocks of early models. There are some great bargains out there at the moment, and hs never been such a buyer's market.
I had a black matchbox porsche turbo given to me in 1978 by my mum which i still have sat next to a photo of my GT3, but had to wait untill I had saved up, bought my first & only Porsche when I was 39 2 years ago [
] & worth the wait
I will really push the average age up 63 [
] Got my first 911 Carrera 3.2 a1984 car when I was 48 ish to be honest could not afford one before that bringing up a family and all that stuff .Now on my 10th Porsche various models and years 924.944.s 928. 993. 996.986 987 etc so owning one at any age is good ...Enjoy life ! This is not a rehearsal !
I was 26 when I got mine.., and have had it for 3 years...so average down again... lol... I've got a Carrera 4 with GT3 kit.. Mine's a 99 plate and had no problems. I bought one purely because I've always wanted one since I was a kid. With the current climate you will certainly see some bargains popping up. However, I would suggest you save a couple of £K, just for a rainy day. Cars may be cheaper these days, but cost of ownership can be alittle expensive. My advise is do your research and don't just buy the first one you see. A car is just a car, but there are good ones and bad ones. I don't use mine everyday, but just an example: 4 new tyres have just cost the best part of £600 and I got a good deal. If you have a heavy right foot it will eat them.
All the best in your search..
Steve
33 years and 11 months for me! I missed my (self impossed) target by 12 years, which is no shame, as many wait a lifetime and never make it! (37 and 3/4 now!)
I could have got one sooner ( I had cars that cost as much, but I avoided buying one for some unknown reason?) People who 'love' Porsche, have their own idea of a 'dream car'.
Anyone can pick up an old 'dog' (as my 'younger' brother did) and say they have a 'Porsche' which is true, but this approach is not for everyone.
Age doesnt matter and it is only down to the individual and 'life'.
" 4 new tyres have just cost the best part of £600 and I got a good deal. "
thats an INCREDIBLE deal!!i just paid twice that for 4 michelin pilot sports!!and after only 7000miles!!.
It all started some 15 years ago then aged 42 with a 964. then a 944 as a daily user, shopping car, then a 993 then a 993 4s, then a 993 turbo, then a nearly new 996 4s, which started to lose money like mad,
So I thought I will buy a 930 and sold the rest. then the collection started.
930 cab, then a 930 se which I still have , then a 968 for shopping , then a 993 4s and a 944s2 and then back to a 996 turbo,
Now 57 with 4 cars it just goe's to show that you get worse has you get older.
New year promise find a nice 356 before its to late.
well for me its 33 and a bit.... never been int the Porsche thing...then a friend lent me his 996 C4 coupe... like candy to a child...just had to have one... so here i am almost a full year with my C4 Cab and loving every moment... Would have to agree that the tyres have been the expensive item so far (went from Bridgestones...nasty hard things to Michelin Pilot Sports...mmmmm) although my PCM has just gone pop so I'm awaiting with baited breath the repair bill in the New Year.
I was 52 when I got my first 911 (996 Carrera 2) but I had a Boxster for a couple of years before that. I swapped the C2 for a C4S after about 3 years and have just defected from the 996 clan by changing to a well specced 997S. The 997 is great to drive, even better than the 996.
Terry
well i chopped my boxster 2006 model in last month for a C4 CAB 2003 model and im 34 ! it really has been my dream all my life to get into a 911 and im loving every min of it , best thing i have ever achieved in my life ! trouble is i dont want to drive anything less now for the rest of my life ! best wishes [

I'm 30 and collecting my first Porsche next week. Could have had one sooner but somehow managed to hold off and save a bit extra for the turbo. Can't wait!
I got 4 Michelin Pilot Sports (18") for just over £700 by playing Kwikfit off against National Tyres.... They started at £1100!
As far as the age goes... I'm 52 on the outside... got my first Porsche (914) when I was 24.
Happy New Year everyone.
Saved up for eight years and got my (current) 996 at 35 years. I'm now 11 months away from 40. (That sounds so much better than, well, you know the figure that I mean[&:])
Bought mine brand new as a 40th birthday prezzie, 8 years ago. Never regretted it, and never smile so much as when I'm driving it, or looking at it or cleaning it...small pleasure. Never thought Id sell it but the latest 997 gen 2 is tugging at my heart...just need a job to pay for it !
Chap at my work turned up on friday with a 02 996 C2...
I was gutted, as hes got his well before me.. He also parks at the window we sit near, so I need only turn to the right to see it, looking at me, begging me to go thrash the life out of it.
Im tempted to go for a Cab, whats the road noise like? Is it as bad as most cabs are?
Thanks
The first was a used 924 in 1985 at the age of 30. Had to wait another 22 years, until I had paid for the private schooling and universities before I could afford to buy and run the second.
Go for the cabriolet. Forget the noise etc. When the top is down, it's the best thing in your life (except for the missus). Enjoy the search and the car.
Bringing the age up again i'm afraid. Couldn't afford one until i was 46 yrs of age. However had 14 great years of owning a 944 before moving to the 98' C2.
Got my first Porsche (Boxster) at 25, basically to annoy the guys in the office and show them that if the came off the company car scheme and spent the resulting additional allowance and fuel money at 40p/mile(which at the time was great) you could buy a nice car instead of a focus or mondeo. I was the first to come of it and was quickly followed by all but one person in our office. Been driving porsches ever since appart from a nasty incident with a BMW Z4 which i would prefer to forget [:'(] i am now 33 with a 996 C4S which is, sounds and looks utterly fantastic. The only thing that lets it down is the rapidly ageing driver[&o] the servicing trips and warranty payments at the OPC have taken there toll !!.
If you go for a Cab. ie a 996 make sure it has the wind deflector, with it the difference is night and day especially if you have a female in the car ,The small glass wind deflector in the Boxster is not great and really offers no great protection at anything over 50 mph wind whistles around the back of your neck .Glad to see that I not alone in the age stakes[

Just a youngster, kitchens my boy. Got a 1980 Carrera Sport Targa in 1983 and ended up with what I consider the ultimate expression of the 911 art.
Am told that I shall have to have me licence looked-at in a years time.

First Lamborghini at 34, still got one
First Porsche at 38, still got two
First Lotus at 39, still got one
First Austin Healey at 42, still got one
First Abarth at 21, ah valete
First Alfa at 23, no regrets
First Lancia at 24, not as good as the second
Was 38 when I had my first Porsche (911 SC) that was 10 years ago now. Now "stuck" with a 996 2002 Cab and wishing I had sold it a year to two ago and kept the cash so that I could now buy a 997 for the same money!! As one of the previous posts said life is not a rehearsal. I have no regrets though as every time you drive a Porsche you really do smile. Apart from tyre wear it has been a most reliable vehicle. Infact I often think what could one replace it with and there are not many cars that combine reliability and usablilty but that equally make you smile!
As a lady owner of a C2 Cab....I'm not disclosing my age [
] but its my first porsche having had a BMW Z4 and I am so impressed with the porsche it holds the road so amazingly well.. love everything about it... its worth every penny!
