Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 1999 996 and I noticed over the last few days the oil level gauge - the digital gauge married to the clock is showing zero oil level and flashing for a few seconds then it disappears. My oil level is right below the "max" line on the dipstick, and my oil pressure is spot on. If I am diagnosing this correctly it's the oil level sensor under the left intake manifold? The Pelican tech article is a bit confusing to me with the wording. It neglects to specify if this is on the right or left side, but only that the knock sensors exist on both sides. If this is the case then I need to remove the passenger side intake runners to change this part? And if so, what else should I replace while I'm in there?

Is it item #13 in this picture? If so it appears I have a fun weekend in store.

Yes, that is it, and yes, you are going to have a fun weekend.

Being that far in should I do anything else like AOS?

Are you going to drop the engine to do this, or will it be done in the car?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm accustomed to dropping the engine on my older 911's for just about everything. But this 996 is a much larger beast. I do not have a lift, but I have everything it takes to easily remove a 993 engine in my garage. So with that aside, I would like to drop the engine but I fear time will be my biggest enemy as I'm limited to weekends mostly to complete the work.

With it out, the AOS is a snap, but doing the AOS with it still in the car can be a bit of a handful due to clearance issues. Pulling the oil level gauge sender can also be problematic due to its length and how the car is equipped.
