When I bought the car some 8 years ago the previous owner told me that the engine was replaced by Porsche after it had repeated issues with the RMS.

Suggestion

The engine may have been replaced by Porsche for continued RMS issues, but THAT is not the engine.....It would have had the " AT" in the engine number as mentioned above..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive searched around and while I found out the location and decode of the m96 head cast date marking I could not find anything about whether the case halves have cast dates in them and where that may be found. Does anyone know? Background - the heads in my March 2003 C4S (door sticker) with first sold date of June 20, 2003 show a cast date of November 11, 2003 - so clearly they were not in the car when it was first sold. The engine number is from 2004 (M96/0366408445) and Im trying to ascertain the history. When I bought the car some 8 years ago the previous owner told me that the engine was replaced by Porsche after it had repeated issues with the RMS. The car was serviced by Sonnen Porsche - unfortunately they were bought out by Indigo and they tell me they have no records there of previous Sonnen Porsche work. Any help in my detective work would be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

My understanding is that if Porsche replaced engine on our 996 for any reason, the engine number would have ' AT ' stamped in.

POST 3Original post

The engine may have been replaced by Porsche for continued RMS issues, but THAT is not the engine.....It would have had the " AT" in the engine number as mentioned above.. Also the Warranty records that were payed by Porsche are also kept at Porsche...not just at the Dealer ...but any work done at the Dealer that was paid by the customer will only be kept at the Dealer and not at Porsche.. That engine likely came from a crashed 2004 and was paid for by the Customer...so the documents may very well be lost since the Dealership was bought out...

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@Porschetech3 that was my thought - hence my focus on trying to determine the actual age of the lump by checking case casting dates. While the dates on the heads are clear, I dont know where to find the dates on the case halves. Do you know?

POST 5Original post

I don't think there is a cast data wheel on the cases but the serial number pretty much dates it...

POST 6Original post

There is a YY date cast right behind the crank pulley. Perhaps visible with a mirror but probably requires removal of pulley. Some other number cast-in too but not sure if they (634..) are a date. No more detail than the year code in the engine number on the plinth, though.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
