Suggestion

The 50/50 ethylene Glycol / distilled water mix you probably currently have, won't change enough from its -40 below 0 rating to maybe -35 at most with a quart or 2 of distilled water added to the 996_ 6 gal coolant capacity.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

View the image below. I didn't know what it was, opened it and there doesn't appear to have a drop of fluid in it. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

If you're talking about the tank with the blue cap, that's your coolant expansion tank. It should be filled with coolant up to the Max line. Check for leaks while you're there (the original cap has been known to leak if original).

POST 3Original post

Indeed that is the coolant expansion tank with the blue cap. Fill with a 50/50 mix of Porsche coolant and distilled water. Did you not notice a blinking light on your coolant gauge? If the coolant was that low, it should have shown a blinking light for low coolant level.

I'll check it out. I just had the radiators flushed and new coolant put in a month ago. What's puzzling is water temp runs 180, or straight up on the on the display and no warning lights with zero leakage on the garage floor. Took a quick look at Wayne Dempsey's 996 project book and sure enough there has to be an issue there. I'll have to call the shop to find out what they filled it with so I can keep the formulation the same. I went through my entire manual and never saw it pictured. I guess since the factory said it would last the life of the car, there's no need to bother with at least a page of documentation and a view of the filler hole. Thank you to all who responded. I need to get this nipped in the bud ASAP.

POST 6Original post

There may not be an issue. U can do a search in coolant replacent and that resi replacent. Its very common to have to fill the resi several times after coolant work due to air pockets.

Hi there fellow Greenville Porsche guy. Sounds like it maybe just had air in the system and burped it out, probably just needs to be topped off. Just making sure you are familiar with ProTech Motorsports here in town, they have done some work for me and done a great job. .

Agree wth all the above about just needing to be topped off after a coolant flush/repair. Very common to have some trapped air that dissipates after a few heat/cool cylcles, not a problem. If it were me, I'd go down to Wallymart for a couple buks, get a gallon of distilled water, and top it off with a quart or 2. The 50/50 ethylene Glycol / distilled water mix you probably currently have, won't change enough from its -40 below 0 rating to maybe -35 at most with a quart or 2 of distilled water added to the 996_ 6 gal coolant capacity. 50/50 ethylene glycol/water mix has roughly 20% less heat transfer efficiency than pure water, I mix a 60% water/coolant for my S Fl cars..

Hi yourself. I've had work done there. In fact, I believe your car was in there about 3 weeks or so ago when I had my tiptronic serviced and the filter changed. I made the appointment to wait on until they were finished. While I was waiting I noticed a beautiful dark colored 996 with clear headlights sitting around front near the door. I walked around it a few times and drooled. On the flip side, I'm actually in Mauldin, but strangers can find Greenville much easier than squinting to find it :-) Rather than continue here running my mouth, I'll just sent you a PM to continue. BTW, you and the other fella I will reply to said something similar.

Do not fill to max line, correct level is 1/2 way between MIN and MAX there is a small tab inside the filler that just gets covered at the mid point, If you fill to max it will normally force coolant out of the relief until it gets to the mid point. At least thats how all my BMW's and My 996 do it.. This is the same way oil dipsticks on german cars work as well. Just my experience,,, always follow a good service manual.

POST 11Original post

Check the part number on the blue cap. If it doesnt end with -04, then replace it.

POST 12Original post

The level of the coolant should be min when cold and max when hot(at least thats how mine works).

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for the information and helping me out. I picked up a gallon of Porsche coolant and it took 2 quarts to bring it up to just under the Max mark since the engine was hot. Better to be proactive than reactive!

I'm not too enamored with Wally World myself. I splurged and went to the dealership. It was interesting to note it actually has a relief valve as well. Took 2 quarts. I agree that distilled would work with the 6 gallon capacity, but if it were a gallon or a couple gallons it was better to be prepared for the event instead of making more trips. The car temp has never come close to a hot range so I was still driving it around. It was serendipity that I just happened to open the engine compartment to find a part number for the riser and look around to see how dirty it was to neaten it up (ego talking here in addition to fixing the cover from slamming on my head or fingers)
