For reference I have run several GT3s from new (including a 2018 991.2 CS manual sold last year) and the 991.2 is easily worth the price delta over the gen 1 on the engine performance alone before you even factor in other advantages with the car overall v the much older chocolate engined gen 1.

Suggestion

By coincidence that car is an earlier run GT3 similar to my white GT3 supplied new by my OPC Chester in 2014 the delivery of which was delayed due to the engine swap issues.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Hi, I stumbled upon this 991.1 GT3. It has an F series engine, with a very clean, documented history. I prefer these to the 991.2. What are your thoughts on this car and the wisdom of buying it? https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/details/porsch... Edited by Jazzer on Saturday 14th December 10:58

POST 2Original post

I suggest reading the last few pages of the 'GT3 prices going up' thread. A few people are thinking the prices of these will plummet once they can no longer be covered by the extended warranty

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’m looking to buy, but proceeding with real caution. The car essentially had the one owner, who looked after it incredibly well. So the condition is good and, while all cars lose dough, I wouldn’t want to take a bath when selling - that’s the aspect holding me back. The car would be covered by OPC warranty till age 15, but then what? I have heard that Porsche would be sympathetic if things went pop beyond that point, but I will not be relying on that.

There are a zillion Porsches older than 15 yrs, I doubt the engine would go pop or do these have an issue like some earlier engines? Generally the GT cars have been solid

POST 6Original post

Great uy as long as you can get the porsche warranty thrown in . Then wait a few months and then rev it till engine fails and let Porsche fit a nice shiny new G series engine which should give you trouble free motoring

I certainly wouldn’t rely on porsche being sympathetic once the car’s out of warranty, they will wash their hands of it.

What are your thoughts on this car and the wisdom of buying it? https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/details/porsch... Edited by Jazzer on Saturday 14th December 10:58 Expensive for a white comfort GT3 even with top history and provenance. The comfort seats restricts its value also the ceramics add little value on a GT3 of this age due to high future maintenance expediture v cheaper steels. By coincidence that car is an earlier run GT3 similar to my white GT3 supplied new by my OPC Chester in 2014 the delivery of which was delayed due to the engine swap issues. My car had a later G series engine installed on the production line following the delay. Due to the future uncertainty of the engine situation of the gen 1 engine imo you would better off waiting until the far superior and more reliable better engined gen 2 drops more within your budget...there have been a few sub £110k cars latterly and prices should be £100k ish if not lower in a few months especially for a 1767 plate 30k mileish comfort car with steels in white. For reference I have run several GT3s from new (including a 2018 991.2 CS manual sold last year) and the 991.2 is easily worth the price delta over the gen 1 on the engine performance alone before you even factor in other advantages with the car overall v the much older chocolate engined gen 1. Also bear in mind there were only 332 gen 1 GT3s in the UK v c660 gen 2s so you have effectively twice as much choice across a used one. Edited by av185 on Saturday 14th December 13:11

G series is what most buyers will want, but there have been further revisions of this too

POST 12Original post

can't you just get it rebuilt once it fails and then it will be fine? Pretty much all engines will need a rebuild eventually, so this one might just need it sooner than some others - but over time that equals out. I am not looking forward to the bill once my V12 will need one, but I am pretty sure it will be required at some point. Same with gearboxes etc.

POST 13Original post

I would not touch one of these cars. I know from personal experience what can happen to the engine. I met somebody who was on their 4th

Same with gearboxes etc. IMO the asking price of this car doesn’t reflect the risk involved, due to its current F series engine which are known to fail. We all know a full engine rebuilt on this GT car wouldn’t come cheap, even with the Porsche 2 year warranty there’s risk involved.

Gives you a steer of what it may trade for in today’s market.

POST 18Original post

A lot of negative views (most from people who have never owned one lol). Time for the positives. Engine performance and that noise, mega! Handling, absolutely sublime. Braking, even with steels is flawless and can be abused all day with no issue. General comfort and usability is really very good. On peage, cruise control, pod cast or music (to get to the passes) very easy. Fuel economy… well it will do high 20’s but realistically you would average low 20’s. General reliability has really been very good in my experience of 15k miles (all road trips Pyrenees and Alps). Just tyres and servicing. Yes I acknowledge the engine issues, but it is possible to enjoy this car without problem, certainly in my experience. There is a difference between ‘price’ and ‘value’ depends which one is more important to you! If you can stretch to a .2 buy one. If not don’t miss out, find a .1

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for all the replies, the information shared has really helped clarify things for me. I’ve driven both versions - both fab - I actually prefer the sound and throttle response in the 1, but I simply can’t live with such a level of uncertainty regarding the engine, so I will follow the general advice and get myself a 991.2.

POST 20Original post

I would go one gen older 997.2 or one gen newer 991.2 in GT3. I personally went 997.2 and 5.5 years on don’t regret it. Good luck in your search of what’s right for you.

Edited by Jazzer on Saturday 14th December 10:58 If you ask a question about buying a car on a forum, 99.99% of the replies will advise you not to. It’s just the way with forums. I’ll be the 0.01% that will advise you to go in with your eyes open and make sure you get a warranty and can extend it when the time comes. Yes there’s a risk, but there’s a risk with ever6 secondhand car that one can buy. If you don’t want risk buy new (if they’ll let you) for double the price and get a 3 year warranty thrown it.

Out of interest - how do you know it has an F series engine? Would it not have had a replacement engine at some point (is that how you know it has an F series engine now)? Sorry if this is a stupid Q. Think the car looks great...

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The hunt for a manual 991.2 is now on. The PCCBs look fab, but I would worry about damage/eventual replacement costs. I would only track the car maybe two or three times a year, so the ceramics might be a good choice. But how do I judge the extent of the wear on say a used car with 10000 miles on the clock? Some of these cars are hammered on track on a regular basis, meaning the discs might not last much longer. Help! Edited by Jazzer on Tuesday 17th December 12:25

Initially by a visual appraisal assuming no delamination etc and if they look ok the density can be assessed from a meter reading at 3 points and likely remaining life reasonably estimated.
