Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I’m looking at a 996 Carrera and noticed this ticking/tapping noise from the engine. Video attached. The noise is present on cold start and is still there after the engine is fully warmed up. I can also hear it when lightly revving the engine, and it does not seem to go away with throttle. Does this sound like normal M96 valvetrain/injector noise, lifter tick, exhaust leak, or something more serious such as piston slap or bore scoring? I know it is impossible to diagnose for sure from a video, but would this be a red flag to you? Would you require a PPI with borescope before moving forward? Thanks you very much for your time

POST 2Original post

Farm from an expert here, but if I heard that coming from my car, I would be at my indy ASAP. It could be something in the cats , muffler or who-knows what else or worse. Yeah, PPI for sure if you are really set on this one IMO. Not worth buying a ticking time bomb (ok, not really pun intended )
