Indeed, when I reset all the CEL codes with my OBDII reader I can often get through a drive cycle and the code/parameter/CEL stays in-spec for quite a few miles/days

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The car:
2006
Boxster S
with 136,000 miles. Running perfectly fine overall. Only tracked once over 10 years ago; otherwise, it's my daily driver -- a mix of highway and stop-and-go during the week, long drives up in the hills on the weekends.
The issue:
* I get a CEL from a failure on "Mode $06 Component Id $05 TID $01". According to the OBDII app I have, the minimum value of this parameter is 2048, with no maximum.
* The failure is intermittent: sometimes it's around the 1200 - 1500 range, and frustratingly sometimes it fixes itself and is in-spec (2443 was one reading)
* I've noticed it can stay fixed and/or fix itself when it's relatively cool weather (low 50's F), or paradoxically when it's really hot out -- in the 90's
* It can sometimes stay fixed long enough to go through a whole drive cycle, thus clearing the CEL. Indeed, when I reset all the CEL codes with my OBDII reader I can often get through a drive cycle and the code/parameter/CEL stays in-spec for quite a few miles/days
* The only info on this code I've been able to find (searching the internet -- nothing came up on this or other
Porsche
forums) is from a manual from a
911
Carrera
, saying the code is used for "measuring the aging of the catalytic converters". I haven't been able to confirm if this is the same setup for a 2006
Boxster S
.
* My mechanic believes the only way to really fix this is to replace the corresponding cat's Bank. (And I can't say he's wrong -- the car is 19 years old, after all; but naturally before I drop $$$$ I want to know more.)
My hypothesis (and hope): the intermittent nature of this parameter going in-and-out-and-back-in spec. could simply mean that some (relatively low cost) sensor in-or-around the cat bank needs to be replaced -- or even just removed and cleaned.
So back to the question posed in the title of this post: Where and what is the sensor behind Mode $06 Component Id $05 TID $01?
Help!
What's the app you're using? Sounds like it's one that is not capable of reading
Porsche
codes properly, which is very common - without a
Porsche
-capable one, the codes don't come through properly, and could even be wrong.
I'd recommend getting one that can read
Porsche
codes properly... there are many options, and some are "free" and others are quite reasonably priced (
ThinkDiag
looks good, I have a
Foxwell
). If you can tell us where you are, you may be near someone who has a device to borrow as well...
Thanks for the code reader recommendations, schwinn!
I'm currently using the OBDLink LX, and I'm very happy with it overall. But alas, it only reports this parameter's current value and its minimum threshold with no other context.
Here is the larger issue: my current mechanic, and the prior one (since retired) both have/had the official
Porsche
laptop, and they both claimed they don't know exactly what this parameter is about, where it's measured, etc. It's just "about the cat bank".
Both mechanics have been honest with me over the years and/or I've been a steady repeat customer for them, so they have no reason to lie to me. However, I also have to wonder if they had to sign an NDA or something not to reveal too much, because they are so experienced and/or the
Porsche
laptop has to give more data than "cat is bad, replace it". Right????
It just doesn't make sense that the nature of this parameter and its corresponding sensor is a complete unknown.
Did either mechanic plug their
PIWIS clone
into the car and actually scan it for stored error codes? If the CEL is lighting up there ARE codes stored that will go a long way toward diagnosing the issue.
Off the top of my head - this sort of thing has happened when cats get old (in miles, not age, and you're don't have that many miles on them.. I'm talking around 200,000 or so..) or the cat gets contaminated (any oil with a high anti-wear additive package) or from bad injectors, or constant oil fumes. OR it might be one of the 4 O2 sensors that are in the car.
Get the correct diagnostics tool (
Foxwell NT530
is good and a lot of us have one so we can walk you through using it..), read the codes, come back with them and we might be able to help out. I'd avoid Facebook 987 groups - the advice given is often quite sketchy or wrong or for some other car.
And meantime:
Welcome to Planet-9, the Friendy Porsche Forum
for guys staring at CELs in dread of emptying their wallets..
It's pretty much a tradition here - you get your first question post free because you're panicking and searching the web and we popped up.. but.. we really like people to introduce themselves and their cars (with photos please!) and we have a dedicated place to do this:
https://www.planet-9.com/forums/
- lots of fine examples there.. and some sticky threads at the top of the forum that are worth reading, gives you an idea of how to use Planet-9, what we're about and how to do things here..
Let us know what the codes are after you get your Porsche specific code reader.
That error message seems incorrect or incomplete, that's why we didn't answer it... you need to get the proper read from the car.
PIWIS
can do this, if it's up to date. If not, get a proper reader and it will get you the correct code. What you have right now is not something I would believe or depend on.
Many of us here have been using diagnostic tools on our Porsches for some years, I own 4 of them. NONE of them use that sort of messaging. The code isn't a
Porsche
code so we won't get anywhere with it.. What are we to assume "Component id $05 TID $01" is if it appears in no official or unofficial table of
Porsche
error codes? We have tables here online of ALL the official
Porsche
error codes for the 987 series cars - and not one of them looks anything like the code you're giving, so any answers will be guesswork.
BTW - I'll ask again - did either of your mechanic friends who own
PIWIS clones
hook them up to your car and scan for codes? I have to assume not - and since they didn't recognize that code/format they weren't able to help you.
Apologies -- the "upper level" code is the infamous P0421 - Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold.
It's apparent that the manufacturers Mode $06 - Component $05 - TID $01 parameter I'm asking about (cut&pasted from my code readers report below) is triggering this upper level P0421 code somehow, because when this parameter "fixes itself" and goes above the 2048 minimum value when it's really hot out or really cold, the P0421 code goes away and there are no other errors. After a drive cycle the CEL clears, and the reader reports "This vehicle is ready for emissions testing"
