Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys - Quick question - I fired up the 997 this morning for the first time in a while - Had this slighly odd sound: sort of a 'fluttery whistle' on idle Can anyone help diagnose what it might be? Car was serviced less than 100 miles ago - hadn't run for about two/three weeks Ambient temp slighly cold here (4 degrees C), but nothing unusual? Cheers y'all Bergs

POST 2Original post

Might be as simple as one of those dried leaves being flicked by a fan? Start with the easy stuff. Clear the leaves out. [ Remembering that various fans can jump into life long after engine shutdown.Keep your fingers].

POST 3Original post

My guess is that it is a bit of moisture on the rubber drive belt for the alternator and ancillaries. I had something similar in a 996 Turbo S.

POST 4Original post

It has a revolving sound to me ... a dry pulley bearing ??

POST 5Original post

Fan/leaf or similar. Nothing major, just irritating. Hopefully only temporarily. (My amateur diagnosis, of course...)

POST 6Original post

Bore score, probably cyl 3. Just kidding my bet would be leaves in the heater vents.

POST 7Original post

I hope it's a leaf but that sounds like a pulley to me...

POST 8Original post

On non Mezger engines you can take the airbox out and remove the aux bellt and then start the engine. If the source of the noise is a pulley or something connected to the aux belt, AC pump, alternator etc then the noise will be gone. If it is one of these you can turn each one individually to ID the issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtIr_ZNGMxE&t=... Not sure if it's the same on a Mezger
