And every car that I have had that didn't have an aftermarket wheel in it was the same.

Could the steering wheel shaft have been bent from the tech perhaps using the wheel as leverage to pull himself out of the car?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I just got four new tires , balance and alignment. When the tech first took it out, he came back to make an adjustment for the steering wheel being off center. After he corrected it, and I paid, I got into the car and noticed while unwinding the wheel (or just turning the wheel for that matter), that it had an elliptical turn to it, not a perfect circle to the wheel. It is hard to describe...the steering wheel is still round of course, but the turning arc is elliptical. It is as if the shaft was bent which the steering wheel is on. The tech said that he did nothing that would affect my steering wheel, all his adjustments are underneath the car. I mentioned this situation/steering movement to my dealer service advisor over the phone (whose shop did not do the work) and he said all the cars do that. I asked if I could show him my wheel, and he said to bring it over. When I got there, he gave me the keys to a Cayman loaner ...and its steering wheel made a similar movement to mine. Anyways, I could swear my steering wheel never made this movement before, and its arch was a perfect circle when turning. I think I would have noticed this...I certainly notice it now everytime I make a turn! When you drive your car today, please look at the steering wheel while it is unwinding...does it make a perfect circle or does it have an elliptical move to it? What could cause this movement? Could the steering wheel shaft have been bent from the tech perhaps using the wheel as leverage to pull himself out of the car?

POST 2Original post

Definitely does that in my CS, also in our BMWs, most cars I believe have this trait, must be to allow more leg space underneath for comfort/clutchwork/ingress/egress (?) and/or a larger view of the dash.

POST 3Original post

Yup, they all do that. And every car that I have had that didn't have an aftermarket wheel in it was the same. It's just because the shaft isn't directly in the center of the wheel's circle. Probably for the reason Consolidated stated.

POST 4Original post

Well Yes......... I just went out in my Mercedes, and the top of the wheel is higher than the bottom of the wheel. I went out and did some tight turns, the steering wheel is eccentric! I never noticed this before - probably it is this way, to easier allow my legs to get in under the wheel when parked................

POST 5Original post

Thanks guys...I just can't believe I never noticed that in the Cayman before Would have bet my life the turning arc of the steering wheel was round!

POST 6Original post

Best stay clear of poker tables/Las Vegas then...

POST 7Original post

Yeah, think they all do that. Still, I thought it was strange the first time I noticed it too, yet the real reason is nothing more than pure imagination, I feel the same everytime I do anything to the car, I always feel it's different, but I know its just my imagination ________________________ "Sir!
