On closer inspection it looks like it's the water pump that's died so they've ordered me a new one and having it fitted tomorrow.

I replaced the cap with the #04 one a couple of months ago and the hissing seemed to be coming from below the tank.

So I had my water pump replaced last week and it turns out that the bearings were knackered.

Anyone any idea what the labour time is likely to be to replace the water pump?
Having recently changed the water pump on my 996.1 it was a pretty easy DIY job, the hardest part moving the engine mounting brace to loosen the pump bolts.

I let it cool over night and then drove it back over to the garage and it was running like a dog, CEL flashing on and off, terrible performance and just awful to drive.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just been out for a great drive over to Ludlow. No reason to go to Ludlow at all, I just love the twisty turny roads. Anywho, when I got back home, after what was probably about an 80 mile round trip, I notice steam coming from the rear ns of the car through the vents on the spoiler. When I opened the spoiler I could hear a hissing sound and steam coming out. The temp gauge during the drive was just over the 0 of 80 and when I got back home there was no coolant leaking under the car. I let the car cool for about an hour and then took it out again and there was no steam so I'm assuming this only happens when under full pressure as the steam seemed to only happen when the black valve by the coolant tank has popped up.
Could this be a crack in the coolant tank, or a cracked pipe due to the fact it only happens under full pressure?
I think you need to get steaming again and have a look under the engine lid.
Years ago, on my first car, I had a persistent coolant leak which I couldn't find. One evening, in the dark but under street lighting, I had the bonnet open and saw a tiny jet of steam coming out of a hairline crack in the top of the brass radiator header.
If its made it through the spoiler vents it shouldnt be too difficult to find.
Steam but no coolant loss would indicate ..
Cracked coolant bottle above the water line ..
rad cap leaking ..
The pressure valve leaking .. black part with O rings inside that can fail .
Water loss and there are several pipes in that area which can leak with the T piece and the thin pipe from it being the most obvious .
Just checked this morning after the car has completely cooled down and I have lost a bit of coolant, so I'm hoping that it's something as simple as a cracked coolant tank. Going to drop it off at the garage today to get them to look at it.
Sounds loads like a cracked coolant tank. Note that the C4 tank is much much cheaper than the C2 and fits the same. Job is a bit of a pain as access is tight.
Got it up to temp this morning, just over 80oC, drove it over to the garage and got it up on the ramps and coolant was dripping out. On closer inspection it looks like it's the water pump that's died so they've ordered me a new one and having it fitted tomorrow.

So I had my water pump replaced last week and it turns out that the bearings were knackered. So far so good, or so I though. I drove the car out of the garage and took it for a drive and when I got back home there was steam coming out the back again. I let it cool over night and then drove it back over to the garage and it was running like a dog, CEL flashing on and off, terrible performance and just awful to drive. Spoke to the guy at the garage and he said it now looks like the expansion tank has cracked and coolant has leaked onto the coils!!
Is this something that anyone has experienced before because from what I can see the expansion tank is nowhere near the coils?
If your coils were a bit marginal I could see this happening, the coolant tank is quite long and extends into the engine bay quite a long way and is directly over the location of the (left bank) coils. Having said that the coils are pretty exposed at the best of times being low down and towards the rear of the car so they should be able to shrug off being doused in liquid.
It sounds like your tank has properly gone this time but as discussed it's not too expensive a part. Might be worthwhile replacing your coils at the same time.
