I've been driving my CS since January 2006 and I'm still puzzled at the strong pulling power past the 7000 rev line. In all my other cars I have had in the past and tuned up, there is a noticeable drop off in power when you get within 10 to 15% of the redline. In the
Cayman S
, this is not so, it seems to be able to keep on pulling strong beyond the 7000 limit. This leads me to speculate that the camshaft of the CS is tuned for beyond the 7k limit. Further support for this is that the performance reprogramming of the ECU by the chip modifying products raise the rev limit by 200 to 500 rpm. I would be more in favor of keeping the current 7k rev limit and have a camshaft tuned for more mid-range and that would start to drop off noticeably at 6500 to 6800 rpm. This happens in all gears so I think there is not much influence by the final drive ratios.
Thoughts?
Apologies if this has been discussed before, I could not find it.
Lance,
I remember reading an article in Excellence which commented on this point when the
Cayman S
was first released. I think the reference was that the engine seemed to be more in the line of the
GT3
engine in that it "wanted, no needed to go to 8000 RPM". Obviously it can't. The dyno charts that I've seen on the 3.4L seem to indicate that there is a drop off of power in the 6500 RPM range although it is not significant. The car does pull all the way to the limiter.
BY the way - nice to see you at CRAB.
Craig
Remember that the variocam plus can be controlled by the ECU so as ECU changes were made to my car the peak numbers moved up the rpm range to where my peak is over 7k now, but my rev limiter is also at 7600 rpm. I think it is all in how you have the car tuned. One of the things I want to do is get my car on the dyno for a long enough session to where we can again tune it by making ECU changes to lots of things like fuel delivery, cam timing, etc. to try and find the optimum setup for what I have on my car.
Ken, seeing how often and hard you drive your CS, resetting the rev limit to 7600 doesn't appear to have negative short term effects. Was the CS rev limit arbitrarily set to add one more factor to keep it from embarrassing the base 997? I am hesitant so as not to take a chance on voiding the warranty by re-chipping (if it does?). An ECU tuning article based on installed mods and desired range (low for AX, mid for short track, high for long track) would be most appreciated I think.
Seriously, something along the lines of what choices of ECU remaps are available and roughly what they do. I'm looking for more low to mid-range grunt.
Nice to see you too Cpt Happy.
