Both my guide bolts are leaking so these need fixing but as I have the engine and gearbox out at the moment this is probably the best time to get them sorted....

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While in the midst of exhaust bolt he'll I think I've found the source of a leak the car has. Pic attached, this is the pass side of the car. From some mild googling it looks to be a timing chain tensioner access? All I would like to know is, how is it sealed (o-ring, crush washer, sealer?) and if I take it out will there be carnage?

POST 2Original post

If similar to m96, these hold the chain guides in place. More like studs with a small thread. They are sealed with o-rings. Can be diffifult to remove if the head has rusted away, but these should be ok if covered in oil! Looking at the photo these are on flywheel side?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry i know its a hideous picture. These are on the aux belt side, you can just see the engine cradle in the pic. Ive done a bit of reading up and it looks like some serious carnage could be caused by removing these tensioners at the wrong point in the stroke. Does anyone have a guide to follow? There was some chat about and 8mm drill bit to lock stuff in place but that was for an M96 engine, do the turbos have a similar procedure?

POST 5Original post

I can only work from memory as its been far too many years since ive had one of these apart .. That would seem to be the chain guide bolt .. basically you need the camshafts removed to be able to remove that bolt .. the guide will probably fall to one side even then . For a small leak i would wonder if it's worth it . I'll tell you what though .. PM me friday / saturday when i have more time and nag me .. i'll read through whatever i can find to prove or disprove my above comment .. I have more time at weekends than during the week .

Appreciate it DeMort. Thanks for that

POST 7Original post

Can Chain Guide Bolts leaking Hi Ross did you manage to fix your leaking cam chain guide bolts ?. Did you just seal up the bolts with RTV or did you manage to get hold of the cam locking tool and change out the bolts ? Both my guide bolts are leaking so these need fixing but as I have the engine and gearbox out at the moment this is probably the best time to get them sorted.... Jer

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't jer. I gave it a few wipes over the course of last year and the amount it was actually leaking was minimal so decided to just wait till it's an actual issue
