Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I am having IMS anxiety again, I have recently purchase an 996.2 manual. It has a leak in the RMS/IMS region as always. No on my 997, I have decide to replace the flange and remove the seal and call it a day. For the 996.2, if the IMS leaks, we assume the bearing has been lubricated. Could I do simply the same if the bearing exhibits no play? Its not a question of cost as much as it is principle as I do not fancy purchasing a bearing for 700EUR. I called 3 indy mechanics, one of them told me "f***, 3 time a day I have to listen to this, no it's not an issue, XYZ" So my question is how should I proceed? I mean, I went to the track with the 996.1 and it was all fine... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsffzRPrBeM&t=62s

POST 2Original post

Bought my 996 nearly 9 years ago with 40k on the clock, original IMS, now with 91k and no issues, still on the same bearing.Leave it and enjoy driving the thing.

POST 3Original post

Your ims cover plate leaking oil and your ims bearing condition have absolutely 0% correlation. 2 totally different things.

POST 4Original post

Speak to 3 professionals who all say the same thing then come on a forum and ask the question again. I don't think this car's for you. I'd sell it quickly. It's going to blow up isn't it.

POST 5Original post

I wouldn't mind if the ims was an issue. Should be worrying about bore scoring, not ims bearings.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see your point, I wish I was in the UK with regards to this, however I am not. As an english speaker in a foreign country, its difficult to find the right place. So please don't mind me asking what could be perceived as redundant questions.

POST 7Original post

I would sort out the oil leak and have a mechanic/specilaist check the condition of the bearing. IMS is a forum hyped issue and as you can imagine is asked so often and long term owners get tired of it, in the US they seem to only be bothered about the IMS which magnifies the issue. Like Alex said there are lots of issues that are prone to failure more often than the IMS, bore scoring is one. you can have your engine oil analysed by millers and they will inform you of any metals present that may help diagnose any wear. Regular oil changes and spirited driving all help, good luck
