Suggestion

If it was me, I'd go ahead and change the oil and send a sample for UOA to see what it looks like (check the oil sump and filter also for any bits).

Suggestion

Anyway, given that the scoring is slight at worst, frequent oil changes (3-5k or every 6 months - whichever comes first) with a quality high moly oil will probably stave off more damage for quite a while.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello Team, Recently purchased this low-mileage warm weather cabriolet Attached are the shots from the borescope that my mechanic sent me. What do you guys think? I plan to daily this. Time to send this to Slakker, or should I be good with regular oil changes/high quality fluids?

POST 2Original post

How many miles do you intend to put on the car per year?

POST 4Original post

If it was me, I'd go ahead and change the oil and send a sample for UOA to see what it looks like (check the oil sump and filter also for any bits). Having said that, I'm in the school of just enjoying the car but learning more about it condition so you can plan and save money for whatever the car will need in the near and long term future.

POST 5Original post

If you haven't, check out one of the recent videos from Slakker about bore scoring. Quite often, the marks on camera appear far worse than in reality due to magnification. Not sure how many miles you have put on the car so far but I would try to identify what oil consumption looks like first and do a UOA to get a reading on metal wear, specifically silicon, and track the trend. Running something like 5w50 would be a good move too. Are there any audible symptoms like piston slap? The photos are ok and while they show some markings we can't see the entire bore. It could be early scoring and you can probably do many miles before you need a rebuild or we could move the camera a bit and expose far worse scoring.

POST 6Original post

Although it appears there are some marks that isn't bad at all from my experience. I would drive and enjoy it. Change the oil every so often and if you have time, toss a bore scope in a random plug hole and see if it's gotten any worse but for me, thats nothing! I think most cars have that amount actually.

POST 7Original post

Forgot to mention, these are $25k cars and if you toss $30K in a slakker motor (which would be cool) you're way upside down...but if you intend to keep it for awhile then your losses are not as much....just a different way of thinking about it.

POST 8Original post

With the limited views you've provided, cylinders look ok, nothing earth shattering going on there. A few scratches is normal on a high mile engine. Nothing to loose sleep over. How many miles on this engine..? If you search the forum, 'GC996' forum member has conveniently listed many many times the deferred maintenance needed on all m96. That is what I'd do on your new to you 996. jmho

POST 9Original post

Wow I never thought it would happen to me but I finally replied to the wrong thread thanks to infinite scrolling. Sorry!

POST 10Original post

You're in luck. There Is a third option: drive it! (Keep changing your oil.)

POST 11Original post

That barely looks like bore scoring and it looks to be at the tops to middle part of the cylinder(s) where bore scoring doesnt generally start. Did they scope the cylinders from the sump? Anyway, given that the scoring is slight at worst, frequent oil changes (3-5k or every 6 months - whichever comes first) with a quality high moly oil will probably stave off more damage for quite a while. In the mean time you can decide whether you love the car enough for a high $$$ engine re-build with Nickies
