Hi, first propper head scratcher a problem with my
987.1
cayman
...
I noticed the fog light and trunk (frunk) light were not working, checked (and replaced for good measure).. nothing...
After lots of reading I believe that the Front Control Module may be a culprit?!
Replacing looks easy (and plenty on ebay) but I have read they need coding?? Surely there cant be much to code as all the 'S' models have the same lighting specs dont they?
If i bought one and tried it, does anyone think damage would be done to my car?

The front end control unit handles lots of stuff (see attachment). If those are the only two things not working, I'd be very surprised if it was the controller. Much more likely a wiring problem. Was there ever any front-end body work? Maybe as simple as the ground wire not properly attached.
Superstar!!
Wow what a great set of info!! I've been looking all over for this kind of stuff! Most links I've found (a few on here and many on other foruks) just go to nowhere!!
Thanks a lot, ill have a good rummage through the diagrams and see what's what...

Yes, since the articles and other uploaded files didn't get migrated with the new site, it's hard to find other sources. Here's a link to the
2007 Cayman Wiring Diagram
that I'll try to keep valid for the near term. I suggest that anyone thinking they might need it, download it now. It's probably good for Gen 1 all years and even many things for Gen 2.
Oh good lord, that will be invaluable !!
Downloaded and saved carefully!!
Thanks again !!

OK so an update.. using the excellent info from RSchwerer, I did as thorough check over the
Cayman
's wiring as was possible.
FOG LIGHTS
-------------------------------
Both fog lights were properly grounded.
Both fog lights were grounded together.
Both fog light +12v wires were ok back to the Front Control Module.
Light switch made correct contacts when switched to fog.
Couldn't test the wire between the switch and "onboard network control module" or from that to the Front Control Unit.
TRUNK LIGHTS
-------------------------------
Trunk light was properly grounded.
Trunk light +12v wire was a different colour to the wiring diagrams and appeared to go somewhere else in the car (disappeared into the the loom) and didn't go to the Front Control Unit as expected.
I am at a loss now, so plan to go to the local independent (ninemeister) for a diagnostic.
I had the exact same problem. The front control modules are known to go bad. You need to upload the configuration using durametric pro, install the replacement module, then upload the module configuration. The control modules all contain the vin # and the gateway module will throw a fault if it doesn't match. I bought a module for $30 off ebay, and rented a copy of durametric pro on ebay for 10 days for $50.

Actually, no. I just learned that on 987.2 (the only users manual I have), cars with Xenon lighting don't get front fog lights. The rotary switch goes Off, Home, Parking, Low/High,
Rear Fog
. I'm not sure if its the same on 987.1.
Hmmm, interesting! I've got her booked in at a local independent for a diagnostic next week. Ive taken all my performance cars there over the years (Z4M M6 S5) so we know each other well and they have listened to my description of what I've done and think that from what I've told them the FCM is likely fried.
In reality though, barring the unlikely event of a cheap fix.. as it doesn't really affect anything other than the fogs, I'm tempered to just bypass it and run a relay off the light switch to the fogs directly as I'll hardly ever use them but they will fail an MOT here of they dont turn on!
