This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everone I have just bought a 2004 996 turbo with 20k on the clock and the engine sounds a little bit rattly at idle . I looked at many cars before buying this one and they all sounded the same, all the different dealers said ( its normal for this engine) anyone else not like the sound and have any infomation as to what makes this sound.

POST 2Original post

It's usually the turbo wastegates that rattle, especially when hot, and I don't think there is much that can be done about it. I certainly wouldn't worry too much about it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again richard i thought it sounded like the exhaust but one dealer told me it was the input shaft what ever that is. I do think it spoils the sound though does yours do it?

POST 4Original post

I think they must mean the intermediate shaft, which is also a common source of rattles. I get a sound like a slight exhaust rattle at tickover when hot, but it disappears above 1000-1200rpm. I put it down to the wastegates, and just don't worry about it. Maybe I just need a louder exhaust to drown it out! [8|]
