Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hey all I am trying to break my audio update project into small pieces. I am planning on starting the rear camera install. I need to find a route from the tail light through the car and into the console. I see lots of posts about this but most simplify it and give this whole part one sentence I know its more work than that. I see some videos on youtube where the wiring is exposed which wouldn't work for me. Anyone know of a good writeup for this? The cayman seems very different. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Lol, chirp chirp chirp go the crickets. Anyhow, I just finished the job. The taillight to the firewall is easy. There really isn't any grommet or anything to pierce, it just loops around the oil/brake service area. It pops out in the middle of the car. I lifted up the rubber mat that the top sits on and routed into the cabin near the passenger rollbar, then into the carpet seams along the passenger side. Not fun but not hard.

POST 3Original post

Hi there, thanks for posting that you got it working. I came here for the same reason you first mentioned. Then was a little disappointed reading your second post as it suffers from the very thing you mentioned in your first post. 1. The taillight to the firewall is easy. There really isn't any grommet or anything to pierce, it just loops around the oil/brake service area. So i've got the wire in behind my rear light, loops around the oil/brake fluid area? you lift the carpet in that area? 2. It pops out in the middle of the car. pops out form where to the middle of the car? 3. I lifted up the rubber mat that the top sits on and routed into the cabin near the passenger roll bar top of what sits on? 4. then into the carpet seams along the passenger side. Carpet in the centre of the car or along the passenger door?

POST 4Original post

Well, really its harder to describe than it is to just do it. I think the reason there is no written documentation is that it really is so simple. 1) Yes I just lifted ther carpet and ran it behind the carpet. 2) When you feed the wire through the back of the car around the oil area, it just appeared in the middle of the car. There was no grommet, it is a straight shot. 3) The top when lowered sits on a heavy rubber isolation mat. When the top is part way up you can fish the wire under that to keep it out of the way of any mechanisms. 4) It is literally visible from inside the car. Grab it and pull it behind the carpet seams. and run along the carpet inside the car after removing the umbrella pocket with 1 torx bolt.

Unanswered questions: Is this a Cayman or a Boxster ? There is a big difference in the area around the engine. I'm gonna guess a boxster due to #4. #1 - the carpet - which carpet? Where did you lift it? This is where a photo would prove valuable. #2 - "middle of the car" - where is that exactly? My boxster has a carpeted panel that covers the engine housing behind the seats. Above that it has a plastic shelf assembly instead of a subwoofer. On the sides it has seat belt fittings. In the middle of the car is the console. SO - where did it pop out? Again you can see why a photo would be useful. Does middle of the car refer to the area the convertible top goes into? #3 - makes it sound like this. #4 - just begs a photo. Where might it be visible inside the car? Thanks - I'm probably going to tackle this next week.. if you don't get to it - maybe I'll remember to take some photos.

Hi Don Sorry, I don't seem to be getting any reply notifications here even though they are on. I have a boxster . I will tell you that I don't always photo journal projects, but I will try to answer the numbered questions. In my opinion, you just need to get in there and tough it out. #1 - the carpet - which carpet? Where did you lift it? This is where a photo would prove valuable. >> The side carpeting along the right side of the trunk area. It runs along the side of the car from the taillight, but this is just how I chose to run it. There is no one way for every situation, this is the best access I could find in a boxster . >> Middle of the car referred to the direct midpoint of the car. If you ran the wire as I mentioned, by the oil filler there is an opening that the wire fed through. It just appears without any sort of snake needed. It ends up around the rollbar attachment points. If you have the top in the service location (half up) and a light on in the trunk you will actually see it. #3 - makes it sound like this. #4 - just begs a photo. Where might it be visible inside the car? You will see the wires poking out. You will see that there are carpeted panels there with seams you can put your fingers into that criss cross and go directly from this area down to the tunnel along the passenger side. I don't know how else to say it but if you go there right now, follow the passenger side tunnel you will see these seams that open up with a finger or a screwdriver.
