In any case we are using a VDO gauge for OIL temp that will be integrated into the dash storage comparment.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, So I am currently in the progress of making an oil temp guage kit for the 996.1/2, 986. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DknEAJIQBaY I of course have a friendly mechanic that would allow me to use his piwis (sounds terrible i know). I would like to be able to connect to the 996 to be able to view OIL temp and recreate a voltage curve based on that. OBD will not display such information. Similarly I would like to check timing and deveation respectively for the 97/96, to be able diagnose timing guides etc... I will also be installing some mode and would love to be able to clear codes. In general, I am looking for the cheapest option to do the above. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Do some searches on here through the search function or Google, it came up recently. Can be done but not easy.

POST 3Original post

Don't know about the 996.2, but didn't think the oil temp. was measured on the 996.1. :dont know: Or are you planning on fitting some sort of measuring device in the engine?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Both 996's in motronic 5/7 have in their pinout a sender for oil temp , the range is ~0v to 2v, 0 being hot 2 cold (approx.). The unit for oil presure also combines temp, but someone smart at porsche decided voltage is better :-(. In any case we are using a VDO gauge for OIL temp that will be integrated into the dash storage comparment.

POST 5Original post

I didn't think the engine had an oil temp sensor that's all. Have you read this: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/827720-oil-temp-gauge-using-the-built-in-oil-temp-sensor.html

POST 7Original post

I have installed an independent gauge in my 996.2 which reads sump oil temp. No idea if this is the best place for it but it is a practical solution and does give a consistent value. It's a VDO gauge which fits pretty well with the rest of the instrumentation and it's also where the CD storage unit was so looks OK It seems to read in the 50-70 deg range most of the time, I have never seen it above 90 but then I'm not thrashing it! If you want any details please let me know.
